The creator of "Shmoozin," Massachusetts- native Arnold Glick, says that the cartoon "evolved out of a natural tendency to see the humorous side of everyday occurrences. One of the cartoon's strengths is that it is based on situations in contemporary Jewish life to which most of us can easily relate." Glick, 30, is a graduate of Brandeis University where he majored in Near Eastern and Judaic studies, and of Georgetown University Law Center, where he received his juris doctor degree in 1980. He practices law in the Boston area. Glick is also the creator of a law-oriented cartoon, "Jest Is For All," which has appeared in legal newspapers and magazines across the country. He is cur- rently working on compiling the cartoons into a book of humor for lawyers. Huron Pontiac, Mich. 48053 681-2211 New York — Even if Israel were to break all remaining ties with South Africa, the impact on the latter's economy and military would be hardly measurable, the American Jewish Committee declared re- cently. In a report entitled Israel and South Africa, the Committee states that "in both the eco- nomic and security field Israel's interaction with South Africa is negligible when compared to South Africa's relations with other countries." Among the points raised in the report are the following: • Twenty-four countries have full diplomatic relations with South Africa. At least 46 Afri- can states trade with Pretoria. • At last 76 percent of South Africa's oil is imported . from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. If the Arab oil-producing countries were primarily interested in under- mining South Africa's regime, the report points out, they would by now have imposed an oil embargo on South Africa, rather than continuing to supply more than $1.5 billion in strategic oil annually. • According to the Congres- sional Research Service, Israeli arms sales to South Africa have been far, smaller than those of such European countries as Italy and France. Moreover, not only Western countries but Eastern European and Arab countries have reportedly been significant arms suppliers to South Africa. Leo Nevas, chairman of AJC's Commission on International Relations, and Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, its director, noted that the AJCommittee, as an American Jewish human rights organization, had repeatedly reaffirmed its condemnation of apartheid. Recent resolutions adopted by AJC, they added, called for a number of legisla- tive and voluntary measures to be employed by Americans in encouraging the democratization of South Africa and the ending of all discrimination against its black and other non-white citi- zens.
