Reform Service
Minneapolis (JTA) — Dele-
gates to the 96th annual con-
vention of the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis
(CCAR), rejected strongly last
week by a voice vote a proposal
made by CCAR President Rabbi
W. Gunther Plant that the late
Friday evening service, long es-
tablished in Reform Judaism, be
eliminated "as the centerpiece of
Reform religious expression."
The outgoing CCAR president
proposed that Reform rabbis
encourage congregants to ob-
serve a traditional Sabbath
dinner at home on Friday eve-
ning and then attend worship
services on Saturday morning.

More Yordim
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
number of yordim — Israelis leav-
ing the country to settle abroad —
increased sharply last year. The
Bank of Israel reported that
10,000 left in 1984. The Central
Bureau of Statistics put the figure
at 17,000.
Yosef Kochik, assistant to the
Minister of Absorption in charge
of discouraging emigration, pre-
dicted over the weekend that the
number of yordim will be even
higher in 1985, because of the
economic crisis and the failure of
government institutions to assist
discharged soldiers and young
married couples who can't find
homes.

Chief Rabbi
Amsterdam (JTA) — A new
chief rabbi of Amsterdam has
been appointed by the Amster-
dam Ashkenazi Congregation
Council. He is Raphael Auerbach,
35, of Jerusalem.
Rabbi Auerbach was born in Tel
Aviv and was for a time a rabbi in
the Agudath Israel kibbutz of
Shaalbim. He teaches at a reli-
gious girls college in Jerusalem.
Aid Package
Washington (JTA) — The Se-
nate voted last week to
authorize the $260 million in
economic aid for Jordan re-
quested by the Reagan Adminis-
tration, but the payments will
be spread over 27 months rather
than ,the 15-month package the
Administration was seeking.

The challenge for
American Jews In the
years following the
Holocaust has been to
succeed in community-
building, advocacy, and
organization. Recently,
progressive Jews have
begun to embrace a
vision of self-Interest
which implies and
demands close alliances
with other groups. Out of
this broader vision of
coalition, New Jewish
Agenda was born five
years ago. And Agenda
has grown to be what its
founders hoped for: a
strong progressive
force In the Jewish
community, and a
Jewish presence in the
progressive community.
Join us In creating and
recreating alliances with
groups whose histories
of oppression and
adversity make them our
moral and political
allies. Join us in shaping
today's response to all
three of Hillel's questions.
