Jewish Activist Jailed

New York (JTA) — Kharkov
Jewish activist Evgeny Aisen-
berg has been convicted of "de-
faming the Soviet State" and
sentenced to two-and-a-half
years in a labor camp, the Coal-
ition to Free Soviet Jews re-
ported last week. Aisenberg, 33,
had been intensively involved in
studying and teaching Hebrew
and Jewish culture since 1978,
when his pro-migration activi-
ties led him to lose his job as a
mechanical engineer.
The major evidence used
against him was the text of
three Purim skits which he par-
ticipated in last year.
Meanwhile, Leningrad re-
fusenik Road Zelichonok was ar-
rested on June 11 and charged
with "defaming the Soviet
State" in reaction to appeals and
letters he'wrote to the West, in-
cluding a recent plea to partici-
pants in the human rights ex-
pert conference in Ottawa.
The coalition reported that
Zelichonok, an electrical
engineer and Hebrew teacher
who has been active in pro-
emigration and Jewish culture
circles since 1978, had
encountered harassment by the
KGB beginning in 1980 when
he was ordered to stop teaching
Hebrew.
In a related development, the
Rabbinical Assembly (RA) has
sent a telegram to Attorney
General Edwin Meese protesting
what the rabbinical group
charged was the denial of "basic
rights" by the police to a group
of 21 rabbis arrested last week
outside the Soviet Union's Em-
bassy in Washington during a
protest against treatment of
Jews in the USSR.

Letters Net
Personal View

A number of Hillel Day
School students had a personal
glimpse of Jewish life inside the
Soviet Union this year, when
they received replies to hun-
dreds, of post-cards and letters
sent to refuseniks as part of a
school-wide campaign.
Hillel junior high school stu-
dents mailed out some 750 post-
cards before Chanukah last De-
cember. In addition, students in
the fifth, sixth and eighth
grades sent more than 200 let-
ters to the Soviet Union. Among
the replies was one received by
fifth grader Joy Simmer from
Abraham Kagan, one of the re-
fuseniks profiled by The Jewish
News in a May 31 story.
Yuri Edelstein, a former re-
fusenik who was allowed to
emigrate to the United States
and William Graham, a Hillel
parent who has visited Russia,
were guest speakers at the
school this year as well.

Argentina Denies

PLO Office

Buenos Aires (JTA) — The
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion will not be allowed to open
an office in Buenos Aires, a
ranking government official told
Jewish leaders. But Argentina
will not move its embassy in Is-
rael from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Deputy Foreign Minister
Jorge Sabato in an address to
the monthly public affairs forum
of B'nai B'rith Argentina, indi-
cated that the government of
President Raul Alfonsin
strongly supports the rights of
the Palestinians and equally
strongly supports Israel's right
to exist as an independent state.

According to the RA, the 21
rabbis arrested on June 10 were
incarcerated for six hours and
were not allowed to meet with
their lawyers for five hours.
"They were also denied the right
to make telephone calls, have
food or water, (and) decent bat-
hroom facilities," the RA said in
the telegram.

New York (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress has
announced the formation of a
new fundraising organization of
prominent lawyers to oppose
what the AJC described as a
"growing assault" on the Con-
stitutional principle of separa-
tion of church and state.
The new grouip, the Fund for
Religious Liberty, will provide
financial support for a broadly
expanded program of
education and research by the
AJC, It hopes to also provide the

MC with gnomes in order to
enlarge Its flaking) legal otoff
from throe to Ave lawyers.
