Better Vaccine
Researched

Rehovot — A young Weizmann
Institute biochemist may be on
the way to developing a safer and
more effective whooping cough
vaccine.
The vaccine now available in-
volves the injection of inert who-
oping cough bacteria and may
cause a host of side-effects includ-
ing permanent brain damage that
occasionally proves fatal. Due to
these side-effects, acceptance of
vaccination by the public in Great
Britain and Japan has decreased.
As a result, the incidence of who-
oping cough has substantially in-
creased in these countries.
At the Weizmann Institute,
biochemist Dr. Emanuel Hanski
is investigating the properties of a
unique enzyme secreted by who-
oping cough bacteria. Both he and
his co-researcher, Dr. Zvi Farfel of
the Sheba Medical Center's Clini-
cal Pharmacology Unit, believe
this material will provide the
basis for a new, safer, and more
efficient vaccine against whoop-
ing cough.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The new
Genealogy Center at Beth
Hatefutsot, the Nahum
Goldman Museum of the Jewish
Diaspora on the Tel Aviv Uni-
versity campus, will feature
computer-stored family histories
that may be recalled at the
touch of a button by visitors.
The new wing is set to open this
month.
According to museum officials,
any family tree going back at
least five generations and with
50 members may be entered into
the computer. The computer
terminals are capable of display-
ing colored graphics in two for-
mats: a biographical summary
of each family member and
three-generation charts entered
on one family member, showing
his or her relationship to im-
mediate relatives.
