CARRY-OUT & CATERING

IF YOU CAN picture a
former delicatessen site that has
changed like a camellion
into a class Roman Italian res-
taurant ... then your vision will
not be shocking.
This is the former Market
Street Deli that became Pickle
Barrel at Market Street (the
present, original PB at Ever-
green Plaza, 12 Mile and Ever-
green, still does a topnotch job)
... and is now known as Ris-
torante Di Modesta ... at Mar-
ket Street, Northwestern near
12 Mile.
Roman Italian, you ask? ...
What is that? ... You've heard
of Southern Italy (Sicilian) and
Northern Italy ... well, Rome is
located in between and offers
somewhat of a different dining
style every single dish hav-
ing garlic and parmigiana
cheese, if even just a slight
pinch ... Modesta Chavez (wife
of Manuel Chavez, owner with
Stefan Agami) for whom the
restaurant was named, is
Roman-born and has a big hand
in the introduction of Roman
food to this region. .
It's just a little place ... seat-
ing only 80 ... which is why
reservations are always re-
quested ... and mandatory on
Saturdays ... Strictly word-of-
mouth so far, but the crowds are

already beginning to gathei at
this type of place you'd probably
find hidden away in Greenwich
Village, New York, or San Fer-
nando Valley, Calif.
There's tablecloths and flow-
ers on all tables, padded long
settee booth on rear wall and
three padded, low-backed pri-
vate booths in front ... high
light oak ceiling, open kitchen,
walls painted soft colors, nap-
kins on trays carried by waiters,
flower-painted coffee cups and
dishware, wide-mouthed water
glasses with heavy bottoms,
waiting area plus another with
seats and counter behind an
etched glass partition.
There doesn't look like a lot of
parking space, but oodles more
is in the rear, and evenings of-
fers a whole bunch extra next
door.
Our first visit was impressive
because of the stark change
from deli to class Roman Italian
dining ... Service left some-
thing to be desired, but our wai-
ter, Michael Ashour was excel-
lent ... courteous, very person-
able, efficient and fast ... It's a
cozy little room where everyone
can see each other in the soft,
intimate atmosphere.
Initial note of impression was
the large fresh creamery butter
pat brought decorated with fresh

basil leaf on top ... Caponatti
salad (fresh vegetables mari-
nated with vinegar and olive oil)
is placed on tables with all
dinners ... Italian bread is
brought in a large bowl.
Second visit showed much im-
provement ... We enjoyed . the
Veal Piccatta (three very tender
and tasty pieces of veal in lemon
butter topped with capers) ...
Julio Iglesias was our
entertainment (on tape of
course), singing beautiful Italian
