EVER SEE A tango done to
Mozart? ... Probably not ... but
it happened at recent outdoor
pool and garden party celebrat-
ing graduation from Harrison
High of Mark Shapiro, son of
Dee and Dr. Marshall Shapiro
... After the disco music sub-
sided so Marshall could hear
some of his own classic melodies
(he loves its soothing while
doing his fine plastic surgery),
Dee and dance instructor Corey
Riojas gave a scintillating ex-
hibition on floor rented for the
younger folks ... Their previous
cha-cha was to a Latin beat ...
Dee and Corey recently placed
first in bronze level of dancing
at Cobo Hall International
Dance Contest.
At Harrison High, Mark
played center on football squad
... and three years in row was
one of five linemen given
"Grubber Award" by coaches to
outstanding men in the trenches
... Harrison was state champ in
'83 and '84 ... He has had jer-
sey number 51 through four
years at Harrison, three years
with parks and recreation teams
at Southfield and West Bloom-
field and little league elevens
since 8 or 9 years old ... A big
51 was on his cake ... as Harri-
son colors of yellow and green
were all about ... making the
football teammates who
attended feel at home ... Pic-
tures on wall were of a pre-prom
photo-taking party ... with par-
ents bringing food and cameras
as all 311 grads attended.
One of his three "Grubber
Awards," a shillelagh-looking
green stick, was in one of the
backyard trees ... Dee had yel-
low ribbons on branches on all
so Mark will come home from
Michigan State U. where he be-
gins college.
Plenty of music but didn't
bother neighbors Dee and Don
Finkbeiner ... both were at
Mark's party ... Daughter of
Dee Finkbeiner, Vicki Ruth,
was among top 20 of 610 contes-
tants vying for "Miss Grand
Prix" honors at Premiere Center
"I'm a winner," she told
Mom, "because I met so many
wonderful girls" ... When didn't
make first five, loaned bathing
suit to gal who had torn hers ...
The lass came in as first
runner-up ... 60 people having
a fun time and Stacie Shapiro,
Dee and Marshall's 15-year-old
daughter, giving a wonderful
modern dance routine utilizing
all her own steps . , . 9-year-old
Kathy Rivkin, there with par-
ents Betty Jean and Dr. Marvin
Rivkin, likes to write descriptive
paragraphs and hopes to put out
a book some day.
