JETS pictured with Dr. Marcus Benedetto, director of opthalmic
research at Sinai Hospital's low vision clinic, are from left: David
Milan, Andrea Golden and Robert Loewenthal.
Twice a week a fleet of "JETS"
land at Sinai Hospital of Detroit.
These JETS, Jewish Teens in
Service, are participating in a
seven-week pilot project spon-
sored by the Jewish Community
Center.
The program, which involves
11 teenagers in grades ten-12,
combines a volunteer work ex-
perience in a Jewish communal
service agency with monthly
workshops on career develop-
ment.
In addition to working at Sinai,
some of the JETS are helping to
develop the summer day camp
program at the JCC. The JETS
program was coordinated by Dr.
Marty Oliff, program director of
the Jewish Community Center,
and Marcia Fishman, executive
director of Hillel Day School.
Because many of the JETS
have aspirations of a medical car-
rer, Sinai Hospital offers ten
teens an opportunity to see the
inner-workings of a hospital
environment.
Several of the JETS work on
units in the hospital and have a
chance to interact with the
patients and nursing staff.
Amy Brown, director of volun-
teer service at Sinai is responsi-
ble for placing the JETS in var-
ious departments throughout the
hospital.
The group includes Emily
Holzman, Andrea Nussbaum,
Robert Loewenthal, Andrea Gol-
den, Ellen Knoppow, David Levi,
David Milan, Dann Sudakin,
David Schwartz and Racheal
Tessler.
