New York — The Cuban
government, reversing a
long-standing policy, has
agreed to liberalize its reli-
gious liberty policy toward the
small Cuban Jewish commu-
nity, including permission for
a rabbi to visit and conduct
religious services on major
Jewish holy days, the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee re-
ported.
Cuba apparently has agreed
"to help Cuban Jewry open a
kosher restaurant in Old
Havana, maintain and take
care of synagogues and Jewish
cemeteries, and open a Sunday
religious school for Jewish
children and young people."

Must present GOUPOI1S with
any incoming orders!

bles, piled with books gather-
ing dust.
' Another building I visited
repeatedly but never found
occupied was the Albert Eins-
tein School of Miramar. I
passed it often and was in-
trigued by the impressive
_bust of the school's namesake
which one could see inside the
small building.
From all that I have seen,
heard and read, it seems clear
I.,that prior to the 1959 revolu-
tion which saw Batista's dic-
, tatorship overthrown by the
Socialist-Communist forces,
the Jewish community in
Cuba was growing and pros-
pering. It was a community
that had strong liberal incli-
nations and involvements,
having built its prosperity on
the basis of entrepreneureal
activity. Now they lost their
private property and personal
fortunes.
When disaffected Cubans
began leaving the country in
large numbers, Jews were
j among them, moving to
Miami, other parts of the
3 - United States and to other
countries in Latin America.
The attrition has been steady
since 1959 when approx-
imately 14,000 Jews lived in
Cuba. In 1965, 2,400 Jews
were left in Cuba. According
to the Encyclopaedia Judaica
approximately 1,500 Jews
lived in Cuba in 1970. Now,
there are less than 1,000. The
progression to zero seems in-
evitable.r]
