communal leader Irwin I. Cohn
has endowed the Allied Jewish
Campaign with a gift of
$500,000, initiating the Irwin I.
and Sadie Cohn AJC Permanent
Endowment Fund.

The contributions were an-
nounced by David Handleman,
president of the United Jewish
Charities, and Mandell L. Be-
rman, chairman of the Federated
Endowment Fund of the UJC,
JWF and its member agencies.
Cohn was chairman of the 1960
Allied Jewish Campaign and re-
ceived the Fred M. Butzel Memo-
Hal Award in 1961. He was a
longtime secretary of Sinai Hos-
pital and he served as a vice

In addition to his commitment
to Jewish causes, he was active in
the larger Detroit community. In
1961, the City of Detroit declared
an "Honorary Citizen — Irwin I.
Cohn Day."
According to his son, Federal
Judge Avern Cohn, "he was
committed to helping his fellow
man." "No one who ever came to
him for assistance was ever
turned away." In all of his
endeavors, Mr. Cohn was sup-
ported by his wife Sadie. In addi-
tion to Mrs. Cohn and his son Av-
ern, Irwin Cohn is survived by a
daughter, Rita Haddow; nine
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.
