Liberal-Herut
Merger OKd
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Liberal
Party voted Friday to merge with
Herut, but according to a formula
proposed by Finance Minister
Yitzhak Modai which was bit-
terly opposed by some of his rank-
ing Liberal Party colleagues.
The 217-187 vote taken early
Friday morning after a grueling
18-hour debate was for gradual
merger of the two components of
Likud to be implemented over a
considerable period of time. It re-
presented a significant victory for
Modai over his principal rivals
for party leadership — Avraham
Sharir, Gideon Patt and Mose
Nissim, the ministers of tourism,
science and justice respectively.
They had demanded a much
swifter merger of the Liberals
with their larger partners and
maintained that Modai's proposal
would never be accepted by
Herut. The battle that preceded
the vote at the Kfar Hamacabiah
hall in Tel Aviv was punctuated
by verbal violence, particularly
between Modai and Sharir, which
both embarassed and amused the
several hundred . delegates
attending a specially convened
party convention.

Jerusalem (JTA) — A period of
relative calm in the West Bank
was broken last week by Molotov
cocktail attacks on Israeli secu-
rity vehicles in the Dahaishe ref-
ugee camp south of Bethlehem,
and Fawar south of Hebron.
There were no casualties.
Except for almost daily rock-
throwing at Israeli vehicles, the
June 12 attacks were the first in-
cidents of anti-Israel violence
since the release of 1,150 con-
victed Palestinian terrorists in
last month's prisoner exchange.
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem
Journalists Association has de-
manded that the Gush Emunim
apologize publicly for a physical
attack on television reporter
Menashe Raz during a mass rally
they organized in Tel Aviv ear-
lier this month.
The rally, which drew a crowd
of about 40,000 to Malchei Yis-
rael Square in Tel Aviv, was bil-
led as a demonstration of support
for 20 alleged members of a
Jewish terrorist underground
currently on trial for acts of vio-
lence against Arabs in the West
Bank and others already con-
victed and serving sentences.
