Al-Abitrator and Attorney Harry Platt
les After Lengthy Civic Career
earned a law degree at the Uni-
versity of Michigan.
Mr. Platt was a former direc-
tor of the Detroit Bar Associa-
tion and was chairman of State
Bar of Michigan and American
Bar Association committees. He
was a member and former
president of the National
Academy of Arbitrators and
wrote articles on law and arbi-
tration.
Harry H. Platt
Nationally recognized leader-
ship achievements in the ad-
vancement of the ORT move-
.ment and the acclaiMed major
role as the nation's most emi-
nent arbitrator marked the
career of Harry H. Platt, who
died June 15 at age 82.
Born in Russia, Mr. Platt
lived most of his live in Detroit
• ,)rior to retiring to California.
He attended the forerunner of
Wayne State University and
Most of his arbitration work
revolved around company-labor
disputes. The late President
John F. Kennedy twice ap-
pointed Mr. Platt to chair corn-
missions to settle railroad labor
disputes.
His Jewish affiliations in-
cluded the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, Jewish Vocational Serv-
ice, Jewish Family Service,
Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan, Zionist Organization
of America, American Technion
Society and Men's ORT.

Barney A. Ross, a retired
milkman who worked for Twin
Pines, died June 17 at age 8P.
Born in New York, Mr. Ross
lived many years in Detroit
prior to moving to Lauderhill,
Fla. He was the editor of the
Castle Condominium newsletter
and the B'nai B'rith Lauderhill
Lodge newsletter. He was
named Lauderhill Lodge man of
the year for 1985.
Mr. Ross was a member of the
Mayor's Commission for the
Handicapped in Lauderhill and
CUNA, past president of the
Dairymen's Credit Union, board
member of Ferndale Co-Op Cre-
dit Union and a modernization
salesman for Ferndale Co-Op.
Mr. Ross was active in B'nai
B'rith and was a past president
of Cong. B'nai David Men's
Club.
He leaves his wife, Minnie; a
son, Martin of Okemos; two
daughters, Mrs. Arlene Zonder
of San Jose, Calif.; and Natalie
of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs.
Lillian Onrich of Southfield and'
Mrs. Beverly Toren; and six
grandchildren. Interment De-

movement for the establishment
of ORT men's clubs. Under Mr.
Platt's leadership, the initial
organization became an inspira-
tion to scores of communities
and the Detroit Men's ORT
emerged as the largest and most
influential, with membership
soon approaching 2,000.
Mr. Platt also was a member
of the Detroit Historical Society,
Franklin Hills Country Club
and the Standard Club.
He leaves his wife, Evelyn;
two daughters, Mrs. Elaine
Binger of El Cerrito, Calif., and
Mrs. Cathie Platt of Charlottes-
ville, Va.; three sisters, Mrs.
Jennie Stamell of Southfield,
Mrs. Mollie Kasin of Camarillo,
Calif., and Mrs. Idelle Platt of
Los Angeles, Calif.; and three
grandchildren. Interment De-
troit.

Sidy Lowenthal, an active
member of Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses, died June 17 at
age 75.
Born in Germany, Mrs. Low-
enthal also was a member of
Hadassah, Sinai Hospital Guild
and Shaare Zedek Hospital in
Jerusalem.
Survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Marvin (Dorie) Shwedel
and Betty; a sister, Elsie Meier
of Miami Beach, Fla.; four
grandchildren and one great-
granddaughter.
Carl Cutler
Running aficionado Carl Cu-
tler had prizes and trophies to
attest to his running prowess.
Mr. Cutler, a resident of De-
troit, died June 16 at age 95.
Born in Lithuania, Mr. Cutler
came to the U.S. at age 19. He
worked for Ford Motor Co., and
later joined his wife's family's
dry cleaning business.
Mr. Cutler leaves a son,
Hymie; two daughters, Mrs.
Julie Nabat and Ms. Helen
Pearl; five grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren.

age 65.
