Had not Shimon Peres and the Unity Government released hundreds of Arab murderers into the Israeli civilian popula- tion for three Jewish soldiers, Israel would not be victimized now. Were it not enough that Jews in Israel will increasingly be targets of carnage from more terrorist attacks, scores of inno- cent Americans may also die, anti-Semites will say, "I told you so," and more Arab ter- rorists will be released to prey and butcher. This because with the freeing of the Arabs, Peres shredded whatever was left of the Israeli principle and boast about never dealng with ter- rorists and Palestinian killers If the Americans die, every anti-Semite, actual and poten- tial, will blame the Jews for their deaths .. . Michael Drissman Committee for the Jewish Idea Levin's Purpose There are a number of errors in the article, "Public Percep- tions Worry Carl Levin," in your June 14 edition. For instance, in the second paragraph, the purpose of my trip to Nebraska and South Dakata was listed as being my concern about farm state percep- tions of the American-Jewish community. As a matter of fact, my brother Sander and I made the trip principally to show the support of members of Congress from so-called industrial states like Michigan for the plight of so-called farm states. Since I believe my basic point was sound, that both our heri- tage and our self-interest re- quire us to be actively involved in and identified with issues of general concern, I especially re- gret that my point may have been obscured. Carl Levin U.S. Senator History Repeats 10600 Galaxie, Ferndale, Mich. 48220 Your article on "Who is a Jew" May 17 resurrected the last 2,000 years of Jewish his- tory. History repeats itself, with many similarities to those of an- cient times. Looking back at the time of the Hasmoneans, three main groups existed that trou- bled the Jewish people of that period. 1) The Perushim (Pharisees) "separated", together with the Tannaim practiced Jewish law, unchanged as it was observed through all generations. They were our Orthodox Jews of to- day. 2) The Eseem (Essenes) were a small religious group with lit- tle interest in politics. 3) The Zadukim (Sadducees) included the rich Hellenists (as- similated into Greek culture). They introduced many customs foreign to the spirit of the To- rah. They reduced the Jewish religion to fit their fancy or con- venience. They are the Reform and Conservative Jews of today. So, nothing has changed since the Hasmoneans .. . Shlomo Micznik Promo Protested The promotion shown on Chan- nel 7 for "Kelly and Co." on May 28th showed Mr. Kelly asking the question, "Is the Jewish lobby cheating the American taxpayer" or similar verbiage. Unfortu- nately, the "promo" was more than just offensive. It was a page out of yesterday's yellow dog jour- nalism. Without further explora- tion, that slogan fed the smolder- ing fires of stereotypic hate. Channel 7, on the very same day, showed a piece by Peter Jen- nings noting the rise of fanatic far-right fringes which combine religious fervor and survivalism. In this program, Mr. Jennings showed groups who openly and on camera advocate the "Final Solu- tion" for Jews. Channel 7's action, via this promotion, feeds those hate merchants . . . Erwin H.
