THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS time, a friend of his arrived. He was a massive fellow, built like a football player. My contact said he had to dirve back into the city to drop off some papers and would take me back to my hotel. I got in front with the ad- visor and the big buy got in the back. We drove along for a while. Then the man in the back seat began asking me questions. I was feeling threat- ened and the questions seemed to have an intimidating edge, but nothing happened and I got off at my hotel without in- cident. Still, it was an anxious couple of hours for me, given the people and the circum- stances. Somehow, when you are seeking information about Nazi war criminals, violence never seems very far away. Of course, Paraguay is not the only country in Latin America that has a Nazi population. In southern Brazil, I was taken to a house that has been made into a shrine to Adolph Hitler, complete with busts of the Fuhrer and pic- tures of him in his glory days. The owners of the house, an elderly German couple who emigrated to Brazil after the war, still consider Hitler one of history's great men. Together with a group of ex- patriate Germans, I was treated to a brunch. Everyone sang German folk songs and drank endless mugs of beer, and the topics of conversation — in German — were largely reminiscences of "the good old days;" the early years of World War II. In Buenos Aires, when I tried to take a picture of a Nazi knife in a gun store window display, toughs snatched my camera out of my hand and smashed it. All over the city I found swastikas scrawled on the sides of buildings. Anti- Semitic literature warning of Zionist plots to take over half of Argentina as a second Israel are sold openly at the local news kiosks. A small stand in the lobby of the Sheraton hotel in downtone Buenos Aires sells Nazi memorabilia. Doors were slammed in my face and I received an anonymous tele- phone call telling me I was a pest. Elsewhere I met with groups of Nazis who believe that the Holocaust was a myth. I met others who view Nazism as a complete way of life. Young Fourth Reichers even held a "Miss Nazi" contest in Chile. In southern Brazil I watched a rally of young Nazi supporters, complete with swastika arm- bands and stiff arm salutes. In Buenos Aires I read a paper called The Voice, as strident a Jew-baiting periodical as any that existed in Nazi Germany. In Paraguay, I met a young Chilean Fourth Reicher who told me his pro-Nazi party in Southern Chile numbered more than 2,500 active members. The threat has not disap- peared. it has only changed and gone underground. The new f,anatics who wear swas- tika' armbands in public displays in Buenos Aires and Santiago many not have the power of Hitler's Germany behind them, but they certain- ly have the desire. That is danger enough. As for me, I am glad that the research phase of my book about Mengele is almost over. The new fanatics who wear swastikas in Buenos Aires and Santiago may not have the power of Hitler's Germany behind them, but they certainly have the desire. The ten-man body consisting of five Labor and five Likud ministers split along party lines on the issue. A tie vote consti- tutes rejection of the motion at hand. The Likud ministers, headed by Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir, insisted that concilia- tion be tried first to resolve the Taba dispute before going to binding arbitration. The 1979 Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty provides for both methods to solve disputes that cannot be re- solved through negotiations. Peres has made clear pri- vately that he is prepared to press his strategy for improved relations with Egypt even at the risk of a coalition crisis. 681-0308 CANON PLAIN PAPER COPIERS ... $599 dIDEO HOUR H IEHI 548-6404 ON E U PHOTO Rentals, Sales, Service Taping of All Occasions I 356-4080 HARVARD ROW MALL 21724 W. 11 Mile Rd. 11 Mile & Lahser Southfield, MI 48076 1111011MIIIIIIIIIIMIIIMIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIMMIIIIII=11111111111=1111111MMINNIIMMI•11111== 1 4198 Orchard Lake Rood (S. of Pontiac Trail) - 111111111111111101111•=110==•111111=11111111111MMEIMINIMMIONENIMIIIIIIIINIMMIll to 4:00 p.m. Monday •The OFFICIAL SUPPLIER TO THE U.S. OPEN BETTER BUSINESS EQUIPMENT 231 W. 9 Mlle Roil FERNDALE Y2 block West of Woodward . , COUPON .7570 OFF Friday, Saturday ri • Typewriters $49.96 Elect. $89.96 • New Correct' eg Typewriters $199.96 - • New Desks $99.66 • Storage Cabinets $29.96 • File Cabinets $39.95 • Correcting Selectric Typewriter $349.96 • Baguet Tables from $39.96 • Office Partitioning $49.96 • /Austin Computer Frain $59.95 • Execetive Oaks $49.95 • Overhead Slide Projector • Comepter Wks $59.96_ • Assorted Office Supplies, Accessories, Wastebaskets, Coffee Brewers, Dictating Equip., Water Machines I Stereos • Cash Registers $99.50 PRESENT THIS AD FOR A FREE GIFT Cask or Credit Cards Only • Delivery Available — Daily 9to5:30, Sat. 9-4:00 (and yarns) • The reward money that was being offered for Mengele's capture intensified the search, but it also increased the number of crackpot and crooked tipsters. But the effort he made to bring him to justice was important. In a larger sense, Mengele is only a symbol. He stands for the depths to which humanity can sink in pursuit of power, for the incredible irresponsi- bilty of a world that could stand by silently and watch 6 million Jews killed, for the hate that still lies in the hearts of bigots throughout the world. It is crucial that the symbol be illuminated for the instruction of mankind.
