• Influenced the deci-
sions of some of the most
powerful chairmen of
multi-national corporations
who used their offices to
lobby on behalf of Saudi
Arabia. Indeed, it was
somewhat surprising that
some of them readily ad-
mitted to Emerson in inter-
views that they acted from
( what they called
"enlightened self-interest."
• Hired some of the most
powerful influence-peddlers
in Washington to lobby for
their cause, many of whom
— including - former Vice
• President Spiro Agnew —
apparently sold out for luc-
rative contracts.
Emerson's portrait makes
the Jewish lobbyists appear
like amateurs. And if the
Arab lobby, as described by
Emerson, is only partially
as effective as he main-
tains, it is a frightening
tale of political influence. It
is a story that needs full
public disclosure and de-
bate.
Whatever the influence of
AIPAC and other Israeli
and Jewish lobbyists, these
efforts are conducted in the
open; they are part of the
accepted political tradition
in this country. But pet-
rodollar politics are hidden
from the public. They deal
in potential conflicts-of-
interest, in national secu-
rity matters, in organiza-
tions whose sponsorship are
not evident and misleading,
and they deal in outright
economic blackmail by con-
tinually threatening an-
other oil embargo.
Emerson reports that, in
unprecedented actions,
Congressional reports were
altered in order not to of-
fend Saudi Arabia, and its
investments in this country
have not been made public
because according to sev-
eral Presidents, including
Ronald Reagan, national
security issues are involved.
If this is true, and Emer-
son's documentation ap-
pears to be sound, then the
public deserves an explana-
tion.
Yet, petrodollar politics
have raised hardly an eyeb-
row, particularly from those
who have been so vocal
about the Jewish lobby hav-
ing a disproportionate polit-
ical influence in Washing-
ton and in other political
centers.
