Friday, June 21, 1985 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Our Newest Location -12 Mile, nr. Northwestern $ VALUABLE COUPON $ Sonitra-supported private school operated for the 75 Israeli children whose parents work for the company. David Kaplan, the prin- cipal of the school, with classes from kindergarten through eighth grade, ex- plained that the students are taught in Hebrew, with the academic goal being to keep on par with their Israeli counterparts. The school compound, six rooms in a small courtyard decorated with gaily-colored sports murals, is located near the apartment building oc- cupied by Sonitra families. The ADL delegates who at- tended Sabbath services join- ed some 17 Israelis. Services were conducted according to Sephardic tradition with the small congregation chanting the prayers aloud in unison. The two women worshipers sat on a backless bench in the last of the four rows of seats. Denis Ansbacher, a French-born Israeli economist who plans to return shortly to Israel after 10 years here, has served as the community's unofficial rabbi, having officiated at some 48 bar mitzvahs in the last decade. He delivered in French the 15-minute sermon on the Torah portion of the week. The only Orthodox Jew in Abidjan, Anspacher ex- plained that he learned the technique of "schechita," the ritual slaughtering of kosher animals, when he knew he would be living here. He slaughters several chickens every week and says that keeping kosher is "no pro- blem. When you marry a religious woman, it is easy." The community gathers together annually to mark Hanukkah and Purim, but, said Ansbacher, "Israel In- dependence Day is the big- gest celebration of the year." He, his wife and two sons will return soon to Israel to join a third son, their eldest, who is studying at a yeshiva in Jerusalem. "It's a good life here," Ansbacher shrugged, "but we are going home for spiritual reasons." G.R. % Off ti 1 if] .01. On ALL Drycleaning 'kJ Or. 12 Mk Rd.
