Pavin's latest achievements were to finish in a tie for second place in the Kemper Open tournament, and in a tie for ninth in last week's U.S. Open in Birmingham, three shots behind winner Andy North. At this point, Pavin's earnings for the first five months of the year 1985 come to nearly $300,000, exceeding his win- nings for all of 1984. Pavin, who competed in Is- rael's Maccabiah Games in 1981, has won but two victories in his brief Professional Golf Association Tour career but he manages to finish in the top ten almost every time. Four weeks ago he won the Colonial Na- tional Invitation Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas on what is generally considered one of - the most difficult courses on the tour. He broke the course and tournament record of 268 set by the great Lee Trevino in 1978. Pavin is the youngest Colonial champion and in setting his course record, came up with a 130 for 36 holes, tied a record of 198 for 54 holes and then went on to create the new figure. At 25, critics say he is just begin- ning to come into his own and it appears likely that he will be- come the best Jewish golfer of all time. At the rate he is going he certainly figures to outreach the late Herman Barron, who had been established as the number one Jewish linksman over the years. He should place in the top five among the PGA money leaders this year. It is interesting to note that Amy • Alcott is running fourth among the women professional golfers with $123,344 in win- nings in 1985.
