Robert 0. Freedman, dean

As a Shiite, Berri is vehe-

his 8,000-man militia has

Minister for the South, he
would make Lebanon's

The local leaders credit
Dr. William Lippy, a War-
ren, Ohio ear surgeon, with
being the backbone of the
ITCA in the U.S. Dr. Lippy
told The Jewish News that
three groups of four Israeli
youngsters are touring the
U.S. this month, playing 60
exhibitions in 35 cities. An-
other group of four youths
are currently touring
Europe. Exhibitions at the
ITCA's annual meeting in
Miami bring the yearly ex-
hibition total to 85-90.
Brode said that one ex-
pense that has been elimi-
nated for the ITCA is tennis
balls. "Even if we could get
new balls donated, the duty
would be tremendous," he
says. To avoid the expense
while filling ITCA's need for
350,000 balls per year, used
tennis balls are collected
from racquet clubs through-
out the U.S. Volunteers col-
lect and ship the balls to
New York, and El Al flies
them free-of-charge to Israel.
According to Brode, "Dick
Savitt, the only Jew to ever
win at Wimbledon and a
member of the Israel Tennis
Centers board, says that if
there ever was a used-ball
tourney, Israel would win
hands down."
The majority of the ITCA's
fundraising is accomplished
through the exhibitions, Dr.
Lippy said, but the organiza-
tion is changing the em-
phasis as it nears completion
of its building program at its
eight centers. A trust and
endowment program is being
established to help fund the
operations.
In addition, the United Is-
rael Appeal and National
Jewish charities in England
and South Africa have be-
come involved, helping to
fund the ITCA. Dr. Lippy
said, "It's one thing to ap-
proach individuals for sup-
port. It's another to get sup-
port of the UIA."
With 10,000 Israeli chil-
dren using the eight sites at
any one time and with Is-
raeli schools busing in stu-
dents for morning and after-
noon lessons, ITCA has be-
come a major world-wide un-
dertaking with an assist
fromsome dedicated De-
troiters.
