Finnish Soldiers Let Go

(

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel-
backed South Lebanon Army
(SLA) released 21 Finnish
soldiers of the United Nations
Interim Force in Lebanon last
week after holding them pris-
oner for eight days. But UNIFIL
sources complained that the
SLA continues to harass its
troops.
By coincidence, Norway's
Chief Rabbi, Bent Melchior, is
visiting Israel. He said in an Is-
rael Radio interview that recent
incidents involving the SLA and
Norwegian UNIFIL troops has
created an upsurge of anti-Israel
sentiment in Norway.
He said the Norwegian
soldiers who join UNIFIL come
to the Middle East as friends of
Israel but return home highly
critical of the Jewish state.
The capture of Finnish groups
by the SLA was also an embar-
rassment for Israel. The SLA
said it seized the Finns because
they had "kidnapped" 11 SLA
soldiers and turned them over to
the Shiite militia, Amal, which
is hostile toward both the SLA
and Israel.
The Finns were released after
the International Red Cross

L i fr

stated that the SLA men were
not kidnapped but defected.
In a related development, Is-
rael has apparently rejected a
United Nations plan to extend
UN peacekeeping activities in
south Lebanon to the Israeli
border.
UNIFIL has consistently re-
fused to recognize the Israel-
backed, largely Christian SLA
although it recognizes the Shiite
Moslem militia, Amal and other
non-governmental armed groups
in south Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Premier Shimon
Peres said that the most impor-
tant lesson Israel learned from
the Lebanon war is that it was a
mistake. The most serious mis-
take, he said in an interview
with the Canadian Broadcasting
Corp. (CBC) was the expansion
of the war far beyond the
limited objectives announced
when the Israel Defense Force
invaded Lebanon on June 6,
1982.
It also was learned that two
Israeli soldiers were wounded
and four terrorists killed in a
clash last week near Majdal
Salim village.
