said. She leaned over and
looked at me sharply. "Snap
out of it." Suddenly I realized
that I had started to believe
the junk I had been hearing for
months. I had brainwashed
myself for the sake of camou-
flage.
It had all seemed so rational.
And of course it's harder to see
evil when it is sitting in front
of your, dressed in street
clothes, looking like your
grandfather and complaining
about arthritis.
Strangely enough, I feel less
at ease thinking of being in
South America than I did
when I was there. It is hard to
explain, because I had no
shortage of warnings. When I
was going to Paraguay, an
Argentinian friend said to me,
"You know, I'm a little ner-
vous for you. You're going to
waste your time, you're not
going to get anything, and you
run a risk." The head of
Reuters news service for all of
Latin America told me that
"Paraguay is a bad country."
He said he never knows when
the officials will turn him back
at the border. "They can do
anything they want with you."
The Paraguayans have such
a poor image — they are
already thought of as a coun-
try that violates human rights
— that they have nothing to
lose by another abuse. I was
told about a British correspon-
dent who went down to find
Mengele in 1982 and was
beaten up. He was so fright-
ened that he got into a cab
afterwards and paid to go all
the way to Brazil, a six-hour
drive. He left all of his belong-
ings in his hotel and fled.
Before I left, a group in
Washington gave me a brief-
ing. they said it doesn't have
to be the government that
gives you a bad time. It can be
the local Germans. First you'll
be ignored, then you'll be told
somehow that you're a pest.
Then, if you stay around too
much more, they'll shake you
up and let you know it's time
to leave.
I met a fellow — an official
of the World Jewish Congress
— who told me he'd been in
Paraguay. He said it's hor-
rible, don't go. He said you run -
a risk, they don't like anybody.
So I wasn't going in totally
blind. I was aware that there
were real obstacles. And I did
take precautions. Wherever I
went in South America, the
first thing I did was contact
the American embassy. I
wanted to give the impression
that I had a government con-
nection that the officials in the
countries I was visiting might
not be aware of. As soon as I
arrived, I would go directly to
my hotel, drop my bags at the
desk and ask, "How far is it to
the U.S. embassy?" When
they told me, I would say, -
"Hold my bags, I'll be right
back." Then I'd get back into
