1945 - 1979

January 17, 1945: Last known date Merigele is seen
at Auschwitz concentration camp.

1945: Mengele reportedly in custody of
U.S. Army at the Idar-Oberstein
prison damp in U.S.-occupied
Germany.

1945-1949: Mengele living in Gunzburg, West
Germany, the town in which he
was born and where his family
has considerable importance.
Some reports have him in
Gunzburg until 1951.

1951: Mengele arrives in Paraguay, and
in subsequent years, lives alter-
nately in Paraguay, Brazil,
Argentina and Uruguay.

1959: Mengele receives Paraguayan
citizenship.

in Canada for a short time. There
is debate whether or not Joseph
Menke was an alias for Joseph
Mengele.

1972: The CIA's Special Narcotics Team
reports Mengele "heavily involved
in narcotics traffic" under the
name of Dr. Henrique Wollman.
CIA also reports that Mengele
worked for some time as salesman
