Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum

Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum will
be the featured speaker at the
American Jewish Committee, De-
troit Chapter, annual dinner-
meeting at 6 p.m. June 27 at Tem-
ple Beth El. Walter Shapero will
receive the AJC Human Rights
Medallion.
Rabbi Tanenbaum, director of
international relations of the
American Jewish Committee, is
the former AJCommittee na-
tional interreligious affairs direc-
tor.
He has served as a member of
the human rights research com-
mittee of the Foreign Policy Asso-
ciation's Study of Priorities for the
1980s.
President Carter invited Rabbi
Tanenbaum as the American
Jewish leader among ten national
religious and academic spokes-
Imen to discuss the state of the na-
at Camp David summit meet-
ings in 1979. He was also ap-
?pointed as a member of the advi-
sory committee of the President's
Commission on the Holocaust.
He is a founder and co-
chairman of the National Inter-
religious Task Force on Soviet
ewry. He was the only rabbi at
Vatican Council II and partici-
pated in the first official audience
of World Jewish leaders with Pope
John Paul II in Vatican City. He
was also the first Jewish leader to
address 4,000 delegates attending
the Sixth Assembly of the World
Council of Churches in Vancouver
in July 1983.
Rabbi Tanenbaum served as
consultant to the NBC-TV nine-
hour special Holocaust and has
lectured at major universities,
seminaries, religious and educa-
tional bodies in the U.S., Europe
and Israel and is the author or
editor of several books and
numerous articles.
