Jeffer- son as a nifty little German res- taurant located in an old ware- house district. The Brau House is or was in an old remodeled carriage house. Do you re- member Brothers Bar-B-Q on Wyoming which won the 1972 greatest-ribs-in-town contest sponsored by the 'Morning Friendly?' Buddy's in 1975 had only one pizzeria — the one on Conant and Six Mile. The book- let describes Buddy's in hushed and reverant tones. 'If Detroit has a big Daddy Pizzamaker from which all good things flow, it's got to be Buddy's.' Also men- tioned is Lou's Finer Delicates- sen on Six Mile where several generations of Marygrove girls gathered in the deli across the street. The girls fell in love with Lou's Jewish goodies like cheese blintzes with sour cream or blueberry topping, chicken soup like Israeli soldiers carry in their canteens, knishes, chopped liver — what a menu. "Let's hear it for the now- defunct Mayfield Chop House on Griswold. It was described as Detroit's 'New Yorkiest' bar with the paneling, leather booths and a glorious and abun- dant collection of oil paintings. The menu put the emphasis on steak, chops, roasts and seafoods with hearty portions at moder- ate prices. The Red Devil on Fenkell — Mama Mia! what a ristorante. It's as plain as the nose on Giovanni's face but the cibo man is strictly bellisimo. The menu at 'La Diavolo Roso' features 20 kinds of pizza, 20 kinds of spaghetti, 10 kinds of homemade ravioli and 11 other Italian dishes. If pasta and pizza aren't your bag, there's a full American menu. Sinbad's at the foot of St. Clair on the River has stood the test of time. The menu features chili, outstanding ham- burgers, steak sandwiches, soup and good drinks. The crowd is fun-loving, especially during boating season. The line starts to form early but moves faster with a drink in your hand. Van Dyke Place is in an old Indian Village townhouse that would cost mega bucks to duplicate in today's market with cut glass window lights, crystal chan- deliers and marble balustrades. The atmosphere is restrained and elegant with food cooked to order. "Most of the restaurants lited in the 1980 poll made it on the top 40 in a 1979 Detroit News poll. Those not listed above are the Money Tree, Carl's Chop House, La Rotisserie, Hyatt Re- gency, Hotel Dearborn, Aliette's, New Hellas, ,Mitch's, Machus Red Fox, Cooper's Arms, Char- ley's Crab, Little Cafe, Bijou, El Nibble Nook, Ye Olde Steak House in Windsor, Golden Mushroom, Aldo's, L'Auberge de la Bastille in Windsor, Joey's Stables, Little Harry's, Chung's, The Sheik, Stouffer's Northland (now closed), The Wellington, Traffic Jam, Tweeny's Cafe (since closed), La Cuisine in Windsor, Dearborn Inn, Digger's (then Clamdiggers). Joe Muer's topped the list."
