MYSTERY MUNCHER
WRITES:... "We ran across a
1975 booklet of very famous and
little known restaurants in De-
troit. Roma Cafe on Riopelle is in-
cluded. Tucked north of the East-
ern Market, back around the turn
of the century, Roma's was a com-
bination restaurant, grocery store
and home. During Prohibition,
Roma was famous for its
spaghetti. It was said that politi-
cians enjoyed the Roma hospital-
ity and cavalier disregard for
Prohibition. But to keep their
consciences clear, they had the
place raided. According to the
1975 description, Roma's menu
lists all conventional Italian dis-
hes but curiously enough the most
popular item is club steak. But
Roma features homemade
spaghetti, nine veal dishes, chic-
ken cacciatore, baked lasagne and
cannelloni. One of its fascinations
is that it's a real challenge to find
Roma Cafe after dark.
