Apartheid Move
Gets Local Nod
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil of Metropolitan Detroit has
endorsed the Anti-Apartheid Act
of 1985, a joint House-Senate
resolution co-sponsored by U.S.
Rep. William Gray (D-Pa.) and
U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-
Mass.).
The Anti-Apartheid Act con-
tains five major provisions. They
are: a prohibition on all new loans
or extensions of credit to the gov-
ernment of South Africa or to any
corporation, partnership or other
organization owned or controlled
by the South African government,
except those directed toward pro-
viding housing and education on a
non-dsicriminatory basis; a pro-
hibition on future investments
and bank loans to South Africa,
including investments in the pri-
vate sector; and a ban on com-
puter sales to the South African
government.
Also, a ban on the sale of
Kruggerrands, which would be
waived if the President could cer-
tify that certain steps are being
taken to dismantle apartheid, and
a direction to the President to look
for multi-lateral agreements with
U.S. allies seeking similar sanc-
tions.
The bill is currently being con-
sidered by several Congressional
committees.
BB Officials
Visit Germany
Washington (JTA)— Following
up on West German Ambassador
Guenther von Well's appeal to
B'nai B'rith to encourage efforts
to strengthen relations between
his country and American Jews,
B'nai B'rith President Gerald
Kraft and Executive Vice
President Daniel Thursz have ac-
cepted the West German govern-
ment's invitation to visit that
European nation and meet with
its top officials.
The B'nai B'rith leaders have
tentatively scheduled their trip in
October.
"Our primary objective is to
explore the most effective steps to
establish a reconciliatory
dialogue between American Jews
and the citizens of today's Ger-
many," Thursz said.
