Detroit To Host
Bond Conference

Detroiter David B. Hermelin,
national campaign chairman of
the Israel Bond Organization, has
announced that the Jewish com-
munity of Metropolitan Detroit
will host the 1985 State of Israel
Bond National Leadership Con-
ference Sept. 5-8 at the Hyatt Re-
gency Hotel.
The conference is expected to
draw 300 participants from
throughout the United States and
Canada. Detroit's Jewish com-
munal leaders will be invited to
take leadership roles in the plan-
ning of the conference program,
and the community will be invited
to participate in all major events.
Metro Detroit Israel Bond Gen-
eral Chairman is D. Dan Kahn.
The annual conference enables
top-level American supporters of
the Israel Bond program to get to-
gether during workshops, semi-
nars and caucus meetings to share
their individual communities'
successful efforts, to exchange
ideas and to learn from each other
as they complete plans for the fall
phase of the Israel Bond cam-
paign.
A special workshop will intro-
duce the State of Israel's newest
loan instrument, the Individual
Variable Rate Issue Bond, which
gives anyone the opportunity to
earn money market interest rates
while helping to support Israel's
economic upbuilding.
Other workshops will em-
phasize synagogue campaigns,
commerce and industry activities,
and Women's Division and New
Leadership programs.
State, national and Israeli dig-
nitaries will address the delegates
during the four-day conclave.
Dinners and luncheons are
scheduled, and a closing brunch
on Sept. 8 will see presentations of
achievement awards to com-
munities with outstanding 1984
Bond results.
Delegates also will be guests at
a dinner in the home of David and
Doreen Hermelin.
The conference program plans
include visits to several sites in
the metro area.

Peres Rules
Out Travel

Jerusalem (JTA) - Premier
Shimon Peres will not attend the
Socialist International meeting in
Stockholm this month, despite the
recommendation by a majority of
his Cabinet that he make the trip
because of its political impor-
tance.
The Cabinet voted 9-4 Sunday
endorsing the journey. But Peres
decided to forego it as a symbolic
gesture to all Israelis not to travel
abroad at this time. Last month,
the government doubled the
travel head tax from $150 to $300,
plus 20 percent of the air fare, to
discourage overseas travel in
order to conserve foreign cur-
rency. Transport Minister Haim
Corfu reported to the Cabinet
Sunday that his ministry esti-
mates that about 110,000 Israelis
would be deterred by the steep tax
from foreign travel during the
summer vacation period.
