BIRTH DEFECTS FOUNDATION

The Jewish Parents Institute
will hold its first b'nai mitzvah
ceremony on Saturday at 8 p.m.
at the main Jewish Community
Center. A reception will follow
the ceremony.
Celebrants include Shanan
Becker, Nicole Kaczander,
Michael Kieda, Albert Levin
and David Ryan.
As a requirement for b'nai
mitzvah, each of these children
studied various topics regarding
growth, ethics, and Jewish life;
completed individual research
projects, read "Rite of Passage"
literature, studied Torah and
Talmud in English, and per-
formed at least 30 hours of
community service during the
year.
The program was designed in
1984 by a committee of JPI par-
ents.

Bar Mitzvah
Twins Ceremony

Randy Green, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Larry Green of Oak Park,
will twin his bar mitzvah with
Evgeny Pekar of Moscow,
RSFSR, USSR, during services
Saturday at Cong. Beth Ab-
raham Hillel Moses.
Evgeny is the son of Yosef
and Lea Pekar. The elder Pekar,
a radio engineer, first applied
for a visa to emigrate in April
1978, and was refused in Oc-
tober of the same year for rea-
sons of "state security."

50th Anniversary

Esther and Phil Minkow

Esther and Phil Minkow,
former Detroiters of Delray Be-
ach, Fla., will celebrate their
50th wedding anniversary on
Saturday at a luncheon in their
honor at LaVeranda Restaurant.

The party will be given by
their children: Dr. and Mrs.
Fred (Milli) Minkow, Mr. and
Mrs. Stephen (Barbara) Gutman
and Mr. and Mrs. Sander (Mary)
Minkow. The senior Minkows
have four grandchildren: David

and Julie Minkow and Rob and
Michael Gutman.
The elder Minkows were mar-
ried in Detroit on June 9, 1935.
Mrs. Minkow was regional sec-
retary to the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization for 14 years and
her husband is a member of Per-
fection Lodge of the Masons and
a past president of the Zager-
Stone Lodge of B'nai B'rith.
Since moving to Florida, he is a
member of the Amara Temple of
the Shriners.
