13 and 14, pretty as a picture
.. and the food so very much
b. etter now ... When's the last
time you had lake perch at
Ivanhoe on Jos. Campau in
Hamtramck? . . . The time-worn
place is still a treat ... And how
about those hamburgers at Sin-
bad's on Lake St. Clair? ... So
many places now much better
than the Coney Island spots on
I Lafayette ... Christo's, North-
western Hwy, and Starlite,
Southfield and Ten, for example
... among others ... Mr. Don-
nie's, Clark, still among the best
for fresh Lebanese food ...
Haab's, Michigan in Ypsilanti,
I well worth the ride ... Don't
like the name, but food, yes. ..
at John Laffrey's, Seven Mile
and Telegraph ... He hasn't
,' owned it in a long time ... fact
is, nobody even knows where
he's at ... Ever had the waffles
at Original Pancake House, W.
Ten Mile? ... May be a swell
delicatessen, but "sleeper" at
Casa Deli owned by Sylvia and
Sid Abromowitz, Elizabeth Lake
Rd., is it's Philly Cheese Steak,
sub or pita ... and Casa's Mexi-
can dishes are also good eating
... Little Las Vegas-type shows
now Fridays and Saturdays at
Kelly's Airport Cafe, M-59, Pon-
tiac ... with Sheila Kay one of
two standup comedy acts plus
magician.

MYSTERY
THE
MUNCHER writes . . . "The fol-

lowing is a 1980 poll of special
restaurants in and near Detroit.:
7Benno's on Agnes (now
closed, soon to -re-open) in De-
troit is tiny and elegant, the
service is leisurely, you need
L .2, reservations, no booze is served,
just wine, and no credit cards.
Bodega's in Redford and on Van
Dyke in Centerline is rated
crowded and popular. Dress is
casual, prices are reasonable
and steaks, seafood and roast
beef are called bargains. But
---' that was in 1980.
"The Botsford Inn on Grand
River in Farmington Hills is a
restored 1836 inn authentically
( furnished by Henry Ford in the
1920s. Specialties are chicken
pie, Dover sole, calves liver,
turkey and dressing, veal Par-
migiana and rainbow trout. Cafe
Cortina on Ten Mile in Far-
mington Hills features northern
Italian cooking in a bistro at-
mosphere with delicate varia-
tions of veal at moderate prices.
The Caucus Club on Congress in
D Detroit has a clubby atmosphere
1 and expert service. It's noted for
London broil, Dover sole, steaks
and spareribs. Restaurant Dug-
> lass in Southfield made the 1980
list. It's rated flamboyant,
glamorous and expensive. Chef
Duglass Duglass Grech is one of
Michigan's most creative chefs.
Jim's Garage on Larned with
early automobile memorabilia
offers an American-Continental
menu. We remember the veal
scaloppine, sliced beef tender-
loin, red snapper with Bernaise,
, Dover sole, scampi en brochette,
' Swiss onion soup and French
fried ice cream.
"Joe Muer's on Gratiot is de-
scribed as comfortable and
warm, a grand old favorite."
