JOTTINGS . . . Sunrise Cafe
on Northwestern may soon open
second operation of same name
... Greenfield and 10 Mile
(former site of Dubbs, Spiro's,
Green-10, Harry's, Foods By
Julie's, etc.) ... Could be owner
Mike Kuchersky would be first
success since Dubbs ... Red
Devil East has opened on Moro-
vian Drive ... Grand opening
will be soon ... Yahia Mawri,
owner of original at Fenkell east
of Greenfield, will remain at
northwest site ... while partner
in east side operation handles
that setup.
Pickle Barrel at Market
Street on Northwestern is no
more ... It'll be an Italian res-
taurant ... Ristorante di Mod-
este. ... owned by Manuel
Chavez (London Chop House,
Restaurant Duglass, Dimitri's of
Southfield, Wildflower) ... and
Stephane Agami ... with open-
ing scheduled for August .. .
Modesta is name of Manuel's
wife ... who'll do all the fresh
pasta cooking ... It'll be open
seven days a week ... with no-
charge valet parking ... Hoa
Kow, Nine Mile and Coolidge,
now cooks all food in vegetable
oil.
Jeff Bloom is new general
manger of Irving's Pic-A-Deli,
Greenfield and 11 Mile ...
number three in ownership of
pharmaceutical wiz Al Cohen
... Wayne Gallagher (Golden
Mushroom, Vineyards) is food
and beverage manager of South-
field Hilton, ... Bud Sherbow of
closed Standard Club North has
interesting job offers for his
masterful and talented manage-
rial skills ... All affairs booked
for June are being honored by
Standard Club ... Members are
looking for another site, perhaps
a hotel . In meantime, hot
Northwestern Hwy. locale is up
for grabs by a few restaurateurs
... and a caterer ... Manny's
Deli, W. Nine Mile in Ferndale,
is under new ownership ...
Former Bloomfield Canopy ...
now called o Bloomie's is owned
by couple of podiatrists ... and
operated by Marvin Siegel,
former caterer at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek ... with son Ira in the
kitchen ... It serves hambur-
gers, omelettes, salads and
soups.
Les Kahrnoff, former food and
beverage manager at Vine-
yard's, is now representative for
the fine wines of Wine Country
Imports ... Irving and Rose
Guttman will open their delica-
tessen in La Mirage, Northwest-
ern Hwy., around August ...
Henry Yee, former owner of
Forbidden City, and mayor of
Detroit's Chinatown, has opened
Chinese restaurant, Yee's Place,
at former Down Under, Hart
Plaza on W. Jefferson ... Henry
and wife, Seiko, still own China
Express at Tally Hall, Orchard
Lake Rd. and 14 Mile ... now
being run by her ... Valet
Parking at London Chop House
is $4 ... Westin Hotel is double
Greektown or Trapper's
Alley parking, good luck ...
Brownie's-On-The-Lake, E. Jef-
ferson, St. Clair Shores, contin-
ually action-packed ... and bet-
i.7.011fi lt ilitCl1;41411 1 K 111 4;11 vi;;i i i: 4
ter food than ever ... Same
with Ginopolis', 12 Mile and
Middlebelt ... Former Vine-
yard's, Northwestern and
Franklin, may become office
building ... perhaps with small
restaurant . . . Although com-
pletely gutted, former Raleigh
House still considered by many
as a great catering spot.
Dickerings still going on for
restaurant in very Prime Sugar
Tree Shopping Center locale,
Orchard Lake Rd. north of
Maple ... Ron Licht won't settle
for just anything ... Mama -
Mia's, W. Eight Mile, will be
renovated and added on to ...
It's true that Lou's Finer Delica-
tessen, W. McNichols, will open
a second place ... Owner Marty
Goodman will take over former
Zukin's, Seven Mile and Ever-
green.
The sea bass at Laikon Cafe,
Greektown, is great ... Can't
beat the Mexican-American fare
at El Zocalo, Bagley and 24th
... If it's duck you want, La
Rotisserie in Hyatt Regency,
Dearborn, ranks among the best
... People who know food have
Tom McKinnon do his thing at
McKinnon's, Main Street,
Northville ... Folks still can't
believe those two 13 oz. steak
dinners for price of one, $11.95,
at Ryan's Tavern at Ironwood,
Maple west of Haggerty ... The
name Ryan's is not that it's an
Irish place ... Ryan is owner
Dan Lublin's grandson ... An-
other Dan, Dan Lowry, is mak-
ing great strides with the
former Freddie's, Hiller Rd. ...
He's a terrific chef and knows
his kitchen ... Be prepared to
take food home from Red Devil,
Fenkell east of Greenfield ...
too good to leave any of the
huge portions ... 55 seats and
always packed ... that's
Maria's, Walnut Lake Rd. ...
with hostess Ruthe Wagner and
owner Al Valente an excellent
combination of food and service
... Dining improvement at
House of Hunan, W. 12 Mile
and Northwestern, is amazing
• . Hard to beat the lake perch
at Kingsley Inn, N. Woodward.
Don't look for frozen foods at
Schuler's, W. Maple, anymore
• . Days of central commissary
are gone and Manager Ed
Meyer is proud of the fresh
goodness ... Speaking of
Schuler's, former director of op-
erations ten years, Dwight
Newell, is doing a bangup job as
owner of his Country Market
Grille, former Maple House,
Southfield and Ten Mile ... He
never was one for frozen foods,
and is his own boss now ...
Pianist Tom Sharp and trio are
danceables at Drake Restaurant,
Drake and Walnut, where Chef
Heinz Menguser and host Bob
Kimoto are doing a top-notch job
. If it's on menu at Rialto
Cafe, Woodward and Nine Mile,
don't be shocked if Charlie or
Frank Pappas make sure you
have the choice next time ...
and those American fries or
mashed potatoes you get are the
real thing ... They still have
oodles of the best under-$5
meals in town.
