Redemption Of Captives

Continued from Page 2

sum the emperor demanded,
Rabbi Meir, known as the
Maharam, refused to be ran-
somed. He spent the last
seven years of his life in
prison, revising his literary
works. When he died, the
emperor refused to surrender
Rabbi Meir's body for 14
years until a large sum was
paid for its redemption.
The fear of dire consequences
exists. The basic principle re-
mains indestructible — that pi-

Robert Nathan, the unforgett-
able author of more than 500
books, in prose and poetry, died
on May 25 at the age of 91 and
his record was appropriately re-
corded in a New York Times
obituary.
His Jewish background was
overlooked and there was no
mention of it in the death
notice. It is so valuable a piece
of Judaica-Americana that it
merits attention.
An early edition of Jewish
Who's- Who does mention the
Jewish facts. He is listed as a
descendant of Gershom Seixas.
It is also recorded that his
cousins were Supreme Court

What the latest act does is in-
crease Israel's responsibilities to
assure protection for people and
state. And the fear persists: that
terror may gain new footings.
When, however, did it ever de-
cline?
In the consideration of impro-
babilities, one could also ask:
Will those who benefit from a
Jewish principle of redemption
of captives learn a lesson in
humanism from it? One can
only ask.

Justice Benjamin Cardozo, the
famed Emma Lazarus and Re-
becca Gratz, who was the foun-
der of the Jewish Sunday school
movement in this country.
Interested readers will do well
to turn to pages of Jewish his-
tory dealing with these names.
Each personality is encyclopedic
in himself and herself.
As an encouragement, let
-there be a recollection in this
column of the Seixas record.
Born in 1745, Gershom
Mendes Seixas was the minister
of the famous Spanish-
Portuguese synagogue, Cong.
Shearit Israel of New York. He
died in 1816. At the outbreak of
the American Revolution he
sided with the Colonists and left
New York for Philadelphia
where he reorganized existing
congregations and became
minister of the Mikve Israel
Congregation which also retains
historic significance in this
country. Returning to his con-
gregation after the war, he was
one of 14 representative clergy-
men who participated in the in-
auguration of George Washing-
ton as President. He was a trus-
tee of Columbia College from
1787 to 1815 and was active in
community and philanthropic
work.
How interesting, and how it
does, indeed, inspire further
study of American Jewish his-
tory!
Meanwhile, additiOnal tribute
is provided to the memory of the
descendant of the great per-
sonalities, Robert Nathan,
whose literary achievements are
unmatched.
