the Shiite village of Tir Harpa

north of the Kibbutz Hanita in
Israel.
Meanwhile, new friction has
developed between the IDF and
its allied South Lebanon Army
(SLA) and the United Nations
Interim Force in Lebanon (UN-
IFIL). UNIFIL spokesman
Timor Goksel has complained
that the SLA, which he refers to
as the "Israeli-backed militia"
has been harassing UNIFIL
forces in the security zone.
The Labor Alignment, in the
interests of preserving the unity
government, decided last week
that it would abstain from vot-
ing on motions by two leftist op-
position factions in the Knesset
to create a special commission of
inquiry into the Lebanon War.
Peres sought to mollify Labo-
rites who favor an inquiry into
the war conducted by a Likud-
led government. He urged his
party to take no stand on the
issue in order to preserve the
unity government. At the same
time he made it clear that he
favors an inquiry in principle.
However, Peres said, given the
pressing problems that face the
nation and the government, now
is not the time. In effect, he re-
served the right to raise the
issue at some future date.

sources reported a recent in-
crease in the number of at-
tempted infiltrations of the se-
curity zone in south Lebanon,
mainly by Palestinian terrorists
but by Shiite terrorists as well.
The security zone roughly paral-
lels the Israel border and is the
last enclave in south Lebanon
occupied by the Israel Defense
Force. The IDF is expected to be
completely out of Lebanon this
week.
Observers say the recent esca-
lation of attacks on the SLA and
IDF in the security zone is the
work primarily of Shiite Mos-
lems. According to these obser-
vers, the Shiite militia, Amal is
trying to assert itself in face of
charges by Palestinians that it
is cooperating with the Israelis.
The Israel Defense Force freed
249 Shiite Moslem prisoners
who returned to their home vil-
lages in south Lebanon. The
prisoners were originally de-
tained on suspicion of carrying
out or planning attacks on IDF
units in Lebanon and were held
in the Ansar camp in south
Lebanon.
But the IDF continued to take
harsh measures against Shiites
suspected of collaborating with
terrorist groups in south Leba-
non. It destroyed four houses in
