Richard Fessler, left, opened the candlelighting service at the Holocaust Memorial Center's eternal flame with Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, Lawrence Jackier, Rep. Justine Barns, Sen. Jack Faxon (face hidden), Reps. Maxine Berman and David Honigman, and Sen. Lana Pollack. Twelve Michigan legislators commemorated the liberation of the Nazi death camps 40 years ago in a moving yahrzeit candlelighting ceremony on Monday at the Holocaust Memo- rial Center in West Bloomfield. The legislators and local sur- vivors of the Holocaust gathered around the eternal flame in the HMC to remember the victims of the Nazis and to call the at- tention of the general commu- nity to the purposes of the HMC. "The Jewish community is ob- viously aware of the importance of this building in the effort to never forget," State Senator Richard Fessler of West Bloom- field told The Jewish News. "Now we have to make others aware." It was Fessler who con- ceived Monday's program last fall in discussion with HMC di- rector Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzveig during the Holocaust Memorial Center's dedication ceremonies. Rosenzveig told the small group of legislators and sur- vivors that the liberation of the camps marked the first time in years that the survivors "knew in which universe we lived. It was the first time that the sur- vivors saw someone with com- passion." Henry Dorfman and Lawrence Jackier, representing the HMC board of directors, also greeted the officials, with Jackier echo- ing Fessler's theme that the HMC "is not just a Jewish in- stitution, but an institution for the entire community. It does not have a narrow focus, but must have a wide impact on the entire region." To illustrate his point, Jackier noted that two high school groups visiting the HMC on Monday came from nearby Walled Lake and from Ontario. During the candlelighting, Rabbi Rosenzweig said, "The greatest lesson of the Holocaust is a thorough commitment to genuine democracy. No indi- vidual can have absolute power." Candlelighters included State Senators Jack Faxon of South- field; Doug Cruce, Troy; Robert Geake, Northville; Lana Pol- lack, Ann Arbor; and Fessler; State Representatives William Bryant of Grosse Pointe Farms; David Honigman, West Bloom- field; Maxine Berman, South- field; James Kosteva, Canton Township; Debbie Stabenow, Lansing; Justine Barns, West- land; and Burton Leland, De- troit. HMC board member Saul Waldman and Holocaust sur- vivors Sonia Popowski, Ab- raham Weberman, Irving Altus, Martin Water, Harry Praw and Joseph Slaim also lit candles. Gandhi Cautions On Israel Ties Paris (JTA) — Indian Prime Minister Ranjiv Gandhi said that his country will establish diplomatic relations with Israel but only "after Israel will change its attitude on a number of issues." In an interview published Monday by the French daily Le Monde, Gandhi said, "we con- sider that they (the Israelis) are tell bellicose and that they fail to take into consideration the existing problems." Gandhi ar- rived in France yesterday for a four-day official visit. Israel has a consul general in Bombay but no diplomatic re- presentation in New Delhi. The Indians have no diplomatic or consular representative in Israel but Israelis often visit India and the two countries cooperate in a number of non-political fields. $10,768 1985 CALAIS Automatic, Tinted Windows, Front & Rear Carpet & Mats, Side Moldings, Rear Defog., Air, AM/FM Stereo w/ Digital Clock.
