Lebowitz interview on a
variety of topics.
Asked if she had any
romantic involvements, she
replied curtly, "Certainly I
have. Next question." She
doesn't see marriage in her
future. "I don't want to be
married," pleading selfish-
ness. "I don't even like to
have company!" She said she
doesn't even want to take
care of herself, but wishes
that "someone would take
this (her life) over."
She comes on like a tough
guy — hard, cold — and
gives the impression she is
doing you a big favor by
speaking to you. However,
she doesn't want to leave
that impression. She'll tell
you she's a very nice girl.
Lebowitz is critical of ev-
erything — feminists, Yup-
pies, New York, writing —
pick a subject and undoub-
tedly she'll have a needle.
Even on writing, the very oc-
cupation that is keeping her
alive, she slings a barb: "Be-
ing a writer in 1985 is like
being a shepherd — There's
not much call for you."
In the future she wants to
write more books, but she
says it depends on how the
lawsuits against her are re-
solved. Why lawsuits? "It's
one of the perks of success."
What would she like the
world to remember about
her? Her phone number, she
quipped. However, she said
she never gave much
thought to the matter. "I'm
not that optimistic for myself
or the world."
Parties and reading take
up her spare time. She
enjoys the works of Calvin
Trillin, Woody Allen and
Marshall Brickman. A fan of
comedy, she rates Richard
Pryor as tops and gave a
kindly nod to deadpan come-
dian Steven Wright. She was
asked to write for some corn-
edians but refused, finding
them egomaniacs.
Success hasn't spoiled Fran
Lebowitz. She dresses in
jeans, loafers, crewneck
sweaters, not exactly the
wardrobe one might expect
from a best-selling author.
She's still pursuing an
apartment with a dining
room in New York, which
she says can only be afforded
by people in the oil business.
Speaking invitations total
about 25 per year. Television
appearances abound. And
she has two books and
numerous articles to her cre-
dit. Is there. anywhere else to
go but up?
