Sachar Is JNF Speaker

When the Jewish National
Fund honors Irving and Flor-
ence Hermelin at a testimonial
dinner on June 19, the event
will mark the 22nd anniversary
of the first JNF-Detroit spon-
sored testimonial, announced
Franklin J. Ellias, president.
The festivities, which include
dinner and the dedication of a
major project in Israel in the
honorees' names, began in 1963
when the late Mr. Abe Kasle
was honored.
The Hermelins will receive
the Keter Shem Tov "Crown of
Good Name" Award and will
also have a JNF recreational
project in Israel named in their
honor.
The Hermelins' project is the
latest in the list of JNF projects
established by Detroiters. Prev-
ious testimonial honorees are:
Bernard Isaacs (1965), Leonard
N. Simons (1966), Louis Berry
(1967), Paul Zuckerman (1968),
Irwin I. Cohn (1969), Philip
Slomovitz (1970), Mrs. Morris

The guest speaker for the
'evening will be Dr. Howard M.
Sachar, educator, author, histo-
rian and professor. Dr: Sachar
received his undergraduate edu-
cation at Swarthmore College
and holds graduate degrees from
Harvard.
He has taught extensively in
the fields of Modern European,
Jewish and Middle Eastern his-
tory, and lived in the Middle
East for six years, two of them
on fellowship, the rest as direc-
tor of Brandeis University's
Hiatt Institute in Jerusalem.
He has contributed to many
scholarly journals and is the
author of eight books: The
Course of Modern Jethish His-

tory, Aliyah, From the Ends of
the Earth, The Emergence of the
Middle East, Europe Leaves the
Middle East, A History of Israel,
The Man on the Camel and
Egypt and Israel. His volume,
Diaspora, has just been pub-
lished.
Based in Washington, D.C.,
where he is a professor of his-
tory at George Washington Uni-
versity, Dr. Sachar is a consul-
tant and lecturer on Middle
Eastern affairs for numerous
government bodies, and also
guest lectures widely at univer-
sities and other forums through-
out the United States and
abroad. He has been a visiting
professor both at the University
of Tel Aviv and at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem.
