Refurbishing the cars
entailed spending thousands
of dollars and required sev-
eral months of work. There
was painting, resurfacing
floors, repairing upholstery
and bolstering supports. Coe
has wired a sound system
into the cars and although
there is no air-conditioning,
electric fans are mounted
above the windows through-
out each car.
Additional work will be
completed over the summer
and a second pair of cars sits
on the station tracks waiting
to be refurbished as well.
The tracks themselves were
in "decent condition," Coe
reports, though it was neces-
sary to repair a number of
ties before any freight runs
could be made.
Anyone daring enough to
buy his own railroad must
have been enthralled with
trains as a child, and Coe,
now 42, was no exception. He
took his fantasy to extreme
heights even then. "You
know how when you're a kid,
you're big on model trains,"
he says. "Well, I was. But
then I thought about having
a real one."
A childhood ride out west
on a train called the El Capi-
tan cemented the dream. "I
had to wait until I was 40,"
Coe says. "But I did get to
make the dream come true."
Maybe so, but he has had
some help along the way.
The Coe Railroad bubble

would almost certainly have
burst if it wasn't for the sup-
port of Judy and Larry's two
daughters, Caryn, 18, and
Tammy, 16. The railroad has
been a family project since
the beginning.
Judy has converted the
Walled Lake train station on
Pontiac Trail and Maple
Road into a souvenir stand
and gift shop featuring rail-
road mementoes and hand-
made toys. She also or-
ganizes group rides and
party rentals. Caryn and
Tammy help passengers
board and do other chores
around the rail yard when
they are not in school. The
family belongs to Temple
Beth El.
Coe enjoys his life on the
rails and, while he admits
that running a train for pro-
fit in contemporary America
represents a big gamble on
his part, he doesn't regret his
decision. "As long as we're
operating on the free
enterprise system, if someone
feels like buying a railroad,
they ought to be able to do
it. And if they try to make
money with it, that's fine
too."
Penn Central and Amtrak,
eat your heart out.
