Jerusalem (JTA) — Moshe
Mandelbaum, governor of the
Bank of Israel, warned the gov-
ernment this week to introduce
drastic budget cuts or face an
economic situation far worse
than the economic crisis of last
year.
Mandelbaum spoke at a press
conference which released the
bank's report on the state of the
economy in 1984. The Bank of
Israel is Israel's central bank
and its autonomous role corre-
sponds roughly to that of the
Federal Reserve Bank in the
U.S. The report blamed the gov-
ernment for the economic deter-
ioration.
It referred specifically to fail-
ure to make meaningful cuts in
the national budget out of polit-
ical considerations, and eco-
nomic measures that were
wasted because of unsystematic
policies.
Mandelbaum's warning fol-
lowed the publication of an arti-
cle in the Wall Street Journal by
Harry Shaw, former head of the
military aid department of the
Federal Bureau of the Budget in
Washington, who warned that
Israel faced a serious financial
crisis this summer unless far-
reaching economic reforms are
introduced now.
According to Mandelbaum, Is-
rael's economy basically is
strong but its natural advan-
tages are eroded by government
policies based on politics instead
of economic needs. He said that
at the end of 1984, Israel was
teetering on the brink of
hyperinflation and was saved
only by the first wage-price
freeze package instituted in No-
vember.
But the government now finds
itself unable to meet its ex-
penses, a condition aggravated
by the continuing balance of
payments deficit, Mandelbaum
said.

BB To Aid
Twister Victims

Washington (JTA) — B'nai
B'rith International has con-
tributed an initial $1,000 to the
relief of the victims of a cyclone
that devastated southeastern
Bangladesh late last month.
Dr. Daniel Thursz, executive
vice president of the Jewish
Service Organization, called on
B'nai B'rith lodges and units
around the world, as well as all
persons of the Jewish faith, to
donate funds to the Moslem
country.
According to reports, more
than 10,000 persons are missing
or dead. Some 14,000 cattle
were killed and nearly half a
million acres of crops destroyed
by the cyclone.
The B'nai B'rith leader urged
members and others in the
Jewish community to send con-
tributions for Bangladesh relief
to the organization's interna-
tional headquarters, 1640 Rhode

Island Avenue, N.W., Washing-
ton, D.C. 20036. Checks should
be made out to "B'nai B'rith —
Bangladesh Relief."
