Stephan Sharf joined Chrysler
in 1958 as a master mechanic.
He gradually moved - up during
the next 22 years and was
elected vice president of the
Powertrain Division in 1980.
The following year he was pro-
moted to vice president-
manufacturing, and early this
year he was named executive
vice president of manufacturing
and component business opera-
tions, a newly-created division.
Greenwald takes pride in
Chrysler's record in hiring
minorities. He points out that
before the company's massive
layoffs a few years ago, Chrysler
employed nearly one percent of
the nation's blacks. His first
priority (besides building qual-
ity cars and trucks) is jobs, and
the company has added about
30,000 workers to its payroll in
the last two years.
"You can readily find oppor-
tunities for people of all types.
We don't have, as yet, the kind
of visibility that goes with titles.
But we've got a strong bunch of
bright, young people, and
they're tough."
Of his own future, Greenwald
notes, "I'm gonna hit the half-
century mark in September and
I think I've got a good 15 years
at least, to go."
By the time he files his last
ten-day sales report (the indus-
try's constant barometer of suc-
cess) Greenwald remarks, "I'd
like to have been a part of an
auto company that is one in a
handful at the top of a
worldwide auto business.
"I want to have been a part of
the best car company in the
world. I don't know if I can get
there, but I'm gonna try." ❑

Soviet Jewry
Exits Decline

New York (JTA) — Only 51
Jews were permitted to leave
the Soviet Union in May mark-
ing a sharp decline from the
some 166 who were permitted to
leave during April, the National
Conference on Soviet Jewry
(NCSJ) reported Monday.
In April, among the 166 Jews
permitted to leave were some
100 who were residents of Mos-
cow, where no movement oc-
curred in May. At that time a
premature euphoria developed
in some areas of the Soviet
Union, according to NCSJ
chairman Morris Abram.
"Recent speculation, based
upon rumors of a possible in-
crease, was misleading to people
who want to see real progress,"
Abram said.
According to Abram, "The

and bear out the need for cau-
tion in evaluating monthly fig-
ures as an indicator of signific-
ant change." He urged the Rea-
gan Administration, Congress,
the State Department, the
Jewish community and its sup-
porters to "be persistent" but to
avoid the trap of "assuming that
if you wish it, it will become
reality."
