Dr. David Danon

Dr. David Danon, chief scien-
tist of the Israel Health Minis-
try, will be the guest speaker at
a Weizmann Science Forum 7:30
p.m. June 25 at the Bloomfield
Township home of Norman and
Susan Pappas. The forum is
being sponsored by the Detroit
Board of Directors of the Ameri-
can Committee for the Weis-
mann Institute of Science in
Rehovot, Israel.
Dr. Danon will address the
topic, "Biology of Aging for
Non-Biologsts."
In addition to his government
post, Dr. Danon is head of the
Meller Center for the Biology of
Aging and holds the Patrick E.
Gorman Chair of Biological
Ultra-structure at the Weiz-
mann Institute.

Attorney Arthur Weiss and
his wife Gayle of Southfield
have searched all over the
world, looking in blook banks
and testing volunteers to find a
person whose tissue type
matches their son's, Brandon.
The 22-month-old boy is suf-
fering from aplastic anemia, a
fatal blood disease which pre-
vents Brandon's bone marrow
from producing enough white
and red blood cells or platelets.
Originally, the Weisses were
told that there was no hope for
Brandon. But, with the help of
Julie DiLaura, Weiss' secretary,
they have organized efforts to
look for a donor who can give
Brandon a bone marrow trans-
plant. According to John
Mouradian, Weiss' associate,
they began to feel that they
would "eventually find a
match."
So far, the Weisses have re-
ceived help from. Detroit Edison
employees and Jackson Prison.
But, there is only a one-in-
10,000 chance that any volun-
teer will match Brandon's tissue
type.
The bone marrow transplant
is a very simple operation for
the donor. Volunteers are in
desperate need, but if enough
people are tested someone will
be found. "There are people who
will match," says Mouradian.
