'8-8 Sat. 9-6 Jerusalem — The lights are on at the Jerusalem Sherover Thea- ter six nights a week, and the hall is usually 85 percent full, but that is not enough for Public Relations Director Shlomit Harburger. "We want the theater active as many hours as possible every day, as many days as possible a year," she says. "Sometimes we have five activities taking place in 12 hours — a children's performance in the morning, an orchestra rehearsal in the afternoon, a concert in the evening,. an outdoor show in the plaza and a late night jazz jam session." Inflation and budget cuts have yet to hit the Jerusalem Theater, situated in the heart of the ele- gant Talbieh neighborhood. In 1983, 12,000 people subscribed to theater, music and dance series at the theater and Harburger says this number is not likely to drop. In fact, three new music subscrip- tion series will be introduced this year. "People are in need of culture and entertainment," the PR direc- tor explains, "and they won't stop going to the theater. But today they are more -choosy about what they see." Ticket sales, supplemented by a small municipal grant, cover all the running costs of the theater. But Harburger is not optimistic that this will last. "The price that we can charge for tickets just doesn't keep up with inflation," she explains, "and we'll have to start cutting back soon." One of the first things affected may be the four-year-old free Saturday morning program, which attracts some 850 people to the theater twice a month. "This program is equivalent to an American-talk-show, except that it's not televised or broadcast on the radio," says Maya Bailey, pro- ducer of the bi-weekly meetings. Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Moshe Arens, Ezer Weizman and the late Moshe Dayan and Yigal Yadin have all participated in the program. Poet Yehuda Amichai, architects David Resnik and David Kroyenka and actors Rachel Marcus and Raphael Klatschkin have also spoken. , A feature which will remain free is the regular display of ex- hibitions in the foyer of the thea- ter. These include photography, weaving, pottery, painting, col- lages and rugs. Individual artists can also exhibit in the theater's small gallery.
