He has not "met his match," as the ads for his new film, A View to a Kill, imply. But Bond has met the sex sym- bol of the '80s. She's all muscle and menace. She'd kill you rather than caress you. She's Grace Jones, dark, dangerous and de- monic, with her hair in two devil's horns. Bond (Roger Moore) does lure Jones to bed. We are left to im- agine what happens there. For the sex scenes in this film are as in- nocuous as anything since the an- tiseptic amours of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. There could be two reasons for this cautious approach: The pro- ducer's desire to retain the PG rating, and the problem with showing more of Moore than his head and shoulders. After all, he has been around for a long time. The question with this new Bond concoction is not whether it's suitable for children, but whether it's suitable for adults. Every- thing is predictable, comic-strip style. You might expect from the opening titles, complete with Duran Duran track, that this will be ".007 Meets MTV." But, aside from Grace Jones, there isn't any of that here. There is a never- ending stream of action stunts, but none as inventive as early Bond. There are sexy women, ominous foreigners and glamor- ous settings, as per the formula. What's missing is suspense. We know before Bond does what the arch villain is up to. And this is a major flaw. The film's middle sags badly. Roger Moore is slick, charming and invincible as always. Jones is sullen and threatening. Tanya Roberts, the heroine, is a luscious, tantalizing beauty. Unfortu- nately, the script and director give her little to do but scream, "James." I counted up to 37 "Jameses" and gave up. Christopher Walken, with bleached blonde hair, plays the head bad guy, a steroid-enhanced Soviet stooge, Zorin. This guy is so bad he double-crosses his own loyal men. After unleashing flood waters and dynamite on his min- ers, and gunning down survivors, he glances at his watch and says, "Good, right on schedule." It's the biggest laugh of the film. The humor is mainly pun- ishment. Bond and Zorin, ogling sexy women while ostensibly talking about horseback riding: "I'm anxious to get back in the saddle." Actually, there are more groans than laughs. One of the conventions of the genre is the hair-breadth escape. And Moore has plenty of those here. Fortunately for him, Wal- ken never figures out that the only sure way to get rid of Bond is to just plain shoot him. Instead, Walken puts him in a car and pushes it into the lake. Or has him pushed into a burning elevator. Is anyone, besides me, old enough to remember The Perils of Pauline? Poor old California. With all its faults, everyone wants to start an earthquake. First, super-crook Lex Luthor in Superman plotted to create a quake to knock the gol- den west into the briny deep. Now Zorin wants to quake Silicon Val- ley out of existence. Do our California movie-makers suffer from some kind of guilt and need to punish themselves? This one is for dyed-in-the-wool Bond fans and kids only.
