Iran Problem Passing Phase Tel Aviv (JTA) — In the 18 years since reunification, Jerusalem has become the largest city in Israel with the largest Jewish population ac- cording to data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics. At the end of 1984, the popu- lation of Jerusalem stood at 445,000 of whom 320,000 were Jewish and about 125,000 non- Jewish. The population of Tel Aviv-Jaffa was 323,000 with 313,000 Jews. But Tel Aviv and its commuter suburbs, Petach Tikva, Ramat Gan, Givatayim, constitute the country's largest urban area with a population of 800,000. Fine Dining In An Elegant Atmosphere Toronto (JTA) — A vitriolic denunciation of Israel earned an emotional ovation at the Cana- '-' dian Arab Federation's annual national convention in Toronto last weekend. William Baker, a U.S. ar- cheologist, who has spent more than 20 years promoting the cause of Palestinian land rights, slammed the Israelis for "hos- tile, belligerent, aggressive, murderous and ungodly" policies regarding claims for Palestinian nationhood. He also criticized Commerce Minister Ariel Sha- ron, labelling him "a terrorist, who lives by the lie." The emotion-laden address brought the audience of more > than 100 Arab Canadians to their feet. Spontaneous shouts and clapping also peppered the speech. "Israel is not a democracy," Baker said. "The Jews are not D God's chosen people. God will return that land (the West Bank and Gaza) to an independent and autonomous Palestinian na- tion." Baker, of Seminole origin, re- peatedly used the analogy of In- dian displacement and repres- sion to illustrate his case against Israel. Jerusalem — The former Israeli ambassador to Iran believes that the present nightmare in Iran is a passing phase, that the heat and passion of the Khomeini revolu- tion will wane, and that one day the basic mutual interests of Is- rael and Iran will come back into play and prevail. Uri Lubrani, Israel's envoy to Iran in the 1970s and currently coordinator of Israeli activities in Lebanon, spoke at a conference at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A call for the ingathering to Is- rael of the thousands of Iranian Jews who have migrated to West- ern countries was sounded by Moshe Katsav, Iranian-born Is- raeli minister of labor and social affairs. He warned that assimila- tion and intermarriage would soon decimate the expatriate Ira- nian Jewish community and ob- , literate its rich cultural heritage.
