We were granted permission to be the first ones in and to make speeches and say Kaddish at the concentration camp, but only after Reagan and Kohl had left. Some argued that we should attempt to be there regardless of what the German and American authorities said; that group advised that we should be defiant and strong. Others said our purpose would best be served by cooperating; the world media would be there, they would report that children of Holocaust sur- vivors had been barred from peacefully protesting in a democtatic society at a con- centration camp where many of these very people had lost their grandparents, aunts and uncles, and brothers and sis- ters. And so the discussion went round and round. As I listened, it became clear to me that a drama was being played out. Some were expressing the general wish to be aggressive and defiant with the German authorities of 1985 as if they were the German authorities of 1945. They seemed, in es- sence, to be fighting to undo the tragedy of the Holocaust. For the others, this was 1985, and we should be making the best of the situation. The media would be utilized, the message would still be heard, and the objectives would still PAY FOR I WEEK STAY FOR 2 WEEKS Seven Days Free You deserve Larry Paskow's "Royal Treatment" at Harbor Island Spa with fitness that fits your budget. Eventually, it seemed, 1985 won over 1945. Thus, on Sunday morning, May 5, we set out for Bergen- Belsen. The mood in the bus was somber and serious. As our bus passed by the pic- turesque German countryside, it was difficult to imagine the events that took place here 40 years ago. As we got closer to Bergen- Belsen, we saw the massive security forces. Our bus was stopped just a mile outside We were like a solemn army marching into Bergen-Belsen. We felt angry, determined and strong. Bergen-Belsen. A van full of West German soldiers pulled up alongside. It seemed very eerie to see young German soldiers with guns pulled up alongside. Images from 1945 were apparent to everyone. 1945 seemed to be merging with 1985. Eventually the ci soldiers left. We got out and we waited. With some others, I went into a nearby pub while we waited for the go-ahead. I spoke in German to some of the Ger- mans there. Surprisingly, they were supportive of our being there. They said they understood what we were doing and why we were there. And in general, the Germans I encountered during the trip wanted us to know that this was a new and different Ger- many from 1945. Reagan and Kohl's visit to Bergen-Belsen was blacked out on West German televi- sion. But we saw the image on TV of their limousine slowly leaving. The TV commentator said President Reagan had shown that he was strong and would not back down in spite of much criticism. I remember feeling angry. At that point, we got the go-ahead. We all quickly jumped back on the bus and drove into Bergen-Belsen. We got off the bus and we started to walk in, arm-in-arm. A TV crew spotted us and filmed our entry. We were like a solemn army marching into Bergen-Belsen. We felt angry, determined and Continued on Page 40
