Prof. Compiles
Aleichem Work

Jerusalem — Professor Herbert
Paper, visiting professor of lin-
guistics at the Hebrew University
- of Jerusalem, is currently carry-
ing out plans to compile a defini-
tive edition of the works of Sholem
Aleichem. Prof. Paper of Hebrew
Union College, who formerly
worked at the University of
Michigan, was awarded a two-
year grant by the National
Endowment for the Humanities.
Prof. Paper is co-editing the
complete Yiddish works of
Sholem Aleichem with Prof.
Chone Shmeruk of Hebrew Uni-
versity's Department of Yiddish
Studies. He hopes the grant will
give him and his staff time to pre-
pare the first 14 of 20 planned
volumes. No funds are currently
available for the actual produc-
tion and distribution.

New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith (ADL) has lodged a protest
with the Egyptian government
over the "outrageous" anti-
Semitic statements that appeared
in the country's newspapers in the
wake of President Reagan's visit
to the Bitburg cemetery.
Among the articles protested
was one which appeared May 6 in
Akhbar and questioned the au-
thenticity of the Holocaust. "It is
strange," the article said, "that
the Zionist propaganda about the
burning of Jews by the Nazis has
become supposedly an established
fact, although this was never
dealt with scientifically."

Share Troubles

Toronto (JTA) — A leading
Irish historian-educator, now a
professor of humanities at
Dartmouth University, believes
that Jews and Irish Catholics
have much in common, both his-
torically and ideologically.
Conor Cruise O'Brien told an
audience at the University of To-
ronto that both Irish Catholics
and Jews are historically perse-
cuted peoples and both lay claim
to disputed territories, according
to The Canadian Jewish News.
But he warned the re-
semblances could be exaggerated,
asserting that Jews have been
persecuted for a much longer
period that have Irish Catholics
and that the Holocaust, an event
"without parallel in history," was
targeted at Jews.
