THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 31, 1985 31 4 DAVID ROSENMAN 20 Years Automobile Experience NEWS Broke Textile Mill Closes Tel Aviv (JTA) — Haifa dis- trict court judge Eliezer Barr, rejecting 'a last minute appeal by Minister of Commerce and Industry Ariel Sharon, ordered the bankrupt Ata Textile mills complex on Haifa Bay shut down Monday. It is the largest single employer in the Haifa area. Sharon, who won a postpone- ment of the original closure or- der, to have taken effect May 1, is lobbying for the sale of the mills to a group headed by Eliezer Peleg, the government- appointed receiver and tempor- ary manager of Ata, and a group of foreign investors. Having failed to win a second postponement, he said Monday that he would oppose, at next Sunday's Cabinet session, a de- cision by the Ministerial Eco- nomic Committee Sunday to sell Ata to a local investment group headed by the two sons of former Finance Minister Yigael Hurvitz. Hurvitz is a Minister-Without Portfolio re- presenting the one-man Ometz faction in the national unity co- alition government. The Committee, of which Sha- ron is a member, preferred the Hurvitz offer because it would require a government assistance in the amount of $9 million compared to the $30-$40 million demanded by the Sharon-backed group. Sharon claims that the Hurvitz investors lack experi- ence in the textile business and cannot offer the market guaran- tees of their rivals. Meanwhile, the closure order, though not unexpected, triggered mass protests by Ata employees. They blocked the main Haifa-Acre highway out- side the Kiryat Ata plant for two hours by lying down on the road. When ordered to move by police, they barricaded them- selves inside the mills. Their ob- jective was to prevent Peleg from carrying out an earlier court order that he hire security guards to make sure no workers remain inside the plant after it is shut down. Kreisky Nixes Israel Trip Vienna (JTA) — Former Chancellor Bruno Kreisky said last week that he had postponed indefinitely his May visit to Is- rael, because his safety could not be guaranteed following the disclosure of his involvement in the 'exchange of three Israeli soldiers for hundreds of Palesti- nian terrorists. Kreisky told a news confer- ence in Vienna that he has spo- ken with officials of the Interna- tional Center for Peace in the Middle East, sponsors of the visit, and they indicated that the prisoner exchange had raised mixed feelings in Israel and they feared possible assas- sination attempts against the former Austrian leader in Israel.
