Paris (JTA) — Nazi hunter
Beate Klarsfeld was ejected
from her hotel in Asuncion,
Paraguay, where she had come
to seek the extradition of the
Auschwitz "angel of death"
Joseph Mengele.
The French newspaper Le
Monde reported from Asuncion
that the management of the
hotel in which Klarsfeld was
staying asked her to leave "at
once," saying it could not con-
tinue to provide a room "for
someone who is insulting
(Paraguay President Alfredo)
Stroessner." The paper did not
say if Klarsfeld left the hotel or
where she is staying now.
Klarsfeld arrived in Paraguay
last week to seek Mengele's ex-
tradition. She and her husband
Serge, along with Vienna-based
Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal,
believe that the former death
camp doctor is hiding in the
northern part of the country and
is protected by Stroessner and
his regime as well as former
German Nazis now living in
Paraguay.

`Star Wars'

Washington (JTA) — The di-
rector of research and technol-
ogy for the United States
Strategic Defense Initiative
(SDI) commonly dubbed "Star
Wars," suggested last week that
the development of a nuclear de-
fense program in space could
have a direct impact on Israeli
defense capabilities against con-
ventional weapons.
Asked in a worldnet satellite
interview with European and Is-
rael journalists whether the
SDI, in which the U.S. has in-
vited Israel to participate, could
also serve to intercept short
range missiles in the Middle
East, Lt. Gen. James Abrahan-
son, director for the SDI organ-
ization, an office of the Defense
Department, said that some of
the very short range tactical
missiles that threaten Israel as
well as Europe are "a very dif-
ficult problem."
But he added, "I believe that
as we are successful with that,
then it can contribute not only
to the nuclear strategic defense,
but also to the many, many con-
ventional threats that are in-
deed facing many of our allies in
different ways than they are
threatening the United States.
But I think the answer is yes,
