PREPARATION FOR:
having a handsome son for her
to meet. I boasted I had two
prospects for this dark-haired
beauty, even bringing out pic-
tures.
Pasha would read every word
of it, and so expressively that
we Americans felt we could
comprehend the Russian. We
beat our knives against our
glasses with vigor whenever the
name of Haman was sounded.
We knew that cue.
Then Lena, the jolly, vivaci-
ous mistress of ceremonies for
the evening, told us the three
things we must do at Purim:
read the megilla, eat hamantas-
chen and make merry.
She had devised a game for us
to fulfill the third instruction. In
the bowl before her were 22
napkins. Each contained a
number — and matching num-
bers would be distributed to us.
She would call each number.
Then she would reach into the
napkin where there would be
two cards and a party favor for
each of us. From the cards, she
would read our fortunes. Then
she would give us our party
favors, we would each have to
make a toast, and we would all
drink.
There was hilarity for each
member of the party. Lena
foretold dark handsome stran-
gers for many of the women —
not their husbands — and ad-
ventures of derring-do for the
men, ranging from a 12-year-old
boy to a senior citizen.
I was Number 17. Lena
foretold an "interesting" man
who would' lead me on adven-
tures around the world.
When I rose to make my
toast, I told how the "interesting
man" beside me, my husband,
had taken me to Ethiopia, North
Africa, Prague and many cities
in Western Europe, Israel and
the Soviet Union in the last
couple of years. I said I had met
Jews in all those places and felt
a bond with them.
"Never, though, have I felt so
much at home, so much amongst
people who seem like members
of my own family, and my hus-
band's family, as I have with
the people around this table
with me."
I meant every word.
That evening I met Luba and
Eliezer, who begged me to take
news of them, and a small gift,
to their daughter. (See story,
Page 16.) I met Andre, the com-
edian ("How do you tell an
Englishman from a refusenik?
An Englishman leaves without
saying goodbye, a refusenik says
goodbye and they won't let him
leaver). .
I gave a silver Mogen David
to pretty Ora which she will
never wear on the street, only at
home. I arranged to call Lena's
daughter. I avoided taking
photographs of a doctor, a re-
fusenik who has managed to
keep his job and didn't want to
lose it.
All that evening I kept think-
ing how much Lena resembled
my husband's great aunt. How
Luba was like one of my own
mother's aunts. How much
