B'NAI MITZVAH
O
the prisoners of conscience, filling
in for Ida Nudel, who is currently
living in exile.
In mid-October 1981, Moscow's
Hebrew teaching community fell
prey to a heightened wave of
harassment, raids and arrests. As
a victim of this national campaigri
to stiffle Jewish education in the
USSR, the Khasiri's home was re-
peatedly searched.
Khasin was summoned to re-
serve duty in April 1983. Until
this time he had never seen mili-
tary duty and is now beyond the
age for military service.
In late May 1983, Khasin's
mother, Adela Khasin, passed
away in Beersheba, Israel. His re-
quest that he be allowed to par-
ticipate in his mother's funeral
was refused by the Moscow Officer
of Registration and Visas for "con-
tradicting the interests of the
USSR."

The Cardo, the newly excavated, and restored Roman street through the
center of Jerusalem, is attracting massive interest from visitors and
Israelis alike. The street continues "underground" for over 500 feet
beyond the archway — and is now lined with luxury stores.

bration at Adat Shalom
Synagogue at 9 a.m. Saturday

Meanwhile, the Adat Shalom
adult bat mitzvah class will twin

The b'not mitzvah are: Naomi

Khasin, a professor of math-

of four textbooks and 16 scholarly
articles, all openly published and
available to colleagues abroad.
Today, he is unemployed and
nearly destitute, as a result of his
application to be reunited with his
mother in Israel.
Khasin's wife, Natasha, a com-
puter programmer, also lost her
job when she applied for an exit
visa. She and her husband have
been the targets of severe KGB
harassment, but nevertheless
have remained activists.
A Hebrew teacher, Khasin has
been threatened with prosecution
for parasitism. His house has been
searched and Hebrew language
books, personal letters and a tape
recorder confiscated. He and his
wife, were arrested for attending
a memorial service at Babi Yar in
1976, and prevented from attend-
ing in 1977. Mrs. Khasina has
been active in women's demon-
strations, at which she has been
roughed up and beaten by the
KGB. She maintains contact with
