Halachah. Most converts do
not accept the stringencies of
the- Shabbat, family purity,
etc. It is precisely for this rea-
son that one who has under-
gone a non-halachic conver-
sion cannot get married in Is-
rael today, for in the eyes of
the observant Jew this person
is not considered Jewish.
Although a Jew who spurns
Halachah is one who is not to-
tally fulfilling his duty as a
Jew, nonetheless his neshama
remains intact and he is no
less Jewish than any obser-
vant Jew. It is unfortunate
that many people have inten-
tionally distorted the issue of
"Who is a Jew?" to have it ap-
pear as if passage of the
amendment in Israel would
disenfranchise the majority of
Jews from Judaism. This is pa-
tently false!

Responsible Jewish leaders
must realize that the aban-
donment of halachic standards
in the conversion process has
caused and will continue to
cause an irreparable split be-
tween Jews. We are at a point
where observant Jews (and
their numbers are constantly
growing) will be unable to
marry anyone who doesn't
bring positive proof that they
are Jewish. In many in-
stances, this proof will be un-
available and cause much
heartache for everyone in-
volved.
It is high time that those
community leaders who are in
the forefront of many Jewish
causes, do all they can to put
an end to the non-halachic
conversions which are tearing
away at the fabric of the
Jewish people.

Learn exciting modern, jazz and ballet techniques each
morning. Perform for Camp Maas; Camp Tamarack, and at
the J.C.C. for parents. In the afternoons, swim, sail, make
crafts, play sports, and make full use of the recreational
activities available at Camp Maas. Harriet Berg personally
directs the program.

Rabbinic Stance

The American Jewish commu-
nity has been poorly served by the
action of the Rabbinical Assembly
in voting not to invite members of
the Israeli Knesset to speak in
their synagogues who supported
changes in the Law of Return
which members of the Assembly,
like many of their congregants,
strongly oppose. Unfortunately
this action is at one with the
statement of the Council of Torah
Sages of Agudath Israel of
America condemning the
president of the Rabbinical Coun-
cil of America for speaking to the
Assembly at its national conven-
tion as reported in the current
issue of The Jewish Observer.
The right of a rabbi to decide
who will speak from the pulpit on
the Sabbath or other religious
service is to be respected. How-
ever, it is not the rabbi's province,
I suggest, to determine who
speaks within the precincts of a
synagogue or other place of public
assembly in tile community on
other than religious occasions.
The effort in the Knesset to

make political capital over deeply
felt differences in the demands of
Halachah regarding "Who is a
Jew" is certainly regrettable. Yet
it is no occasion for censorship. If
there is in fact a basis in Jewish
tradition for the action taken by
the Assembly, lay members of the
community should be advised.

Mis-Quotation

In reference to Alan Hitsky's
article, "Bitter Reminder," dated
May 10, I wish to inform you that I
was misquoted.
I did not make the ending
statement, "but I think another
Holocaust started today."
I expressed my fear that a visit
to the Bitburg Cememtery by
President Reagan could trigger
the opening of an insidious Pan-
dora's Box which then might re-
awaken the forces of evil to a re-
petition of those hateful acts of
past history.
