Ruth Laredo
Internationally renowned
pianist, Ruth Leredo will be the
featured artist at this year's Clara
and Peter Weisberg Concert on
June 11 at 8 p.m. at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
Born in Detroit, Miss Laredo
studied with Mischa Kottler and
Rudolph Serkin. She first played
with the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra in 1949 when she was 11
years old and made a professional
debut under the auspices of the
Music Study Group of Dertroit in
1957.
Her father, Ben Meckler, was a
Hebrew teacher at Shaarey Zadek
for a number of years. Miriam
Meckler, her mother, is active in.
the Music Study Club. Miss
Laredo is one of five pianists cho-
sen to perform at Carnegie Hall's
90th anniversary. She was the
guest soloist with the Ameican
Symphony at a special occasion
marking the centennial of
Leopold Stokowski.
Miss Laredo is the first pianist
to have recorded the complete solo
works of Rachmaninoff, in addi-
tion to her acclaimed recordings of
Scriabin and Ravel, all of which
have won awards from Stereo Re-
view and Saturday Review maga-
zines. Her first Grammy award
nomination was in 1976, and cur-
rently she is recording the music
of Samuel Barber.
Admission to the Weisberg
Concert is free. For tickets, send a
stamped, self-addressed envelope
to the synagogue, 27375 Bell Rd.,
Southfield.
Patrons will be invited to a re-
ception following the concert
when they will meet Miss Laredo.
There will be no reserved seating
at this year's concert.
Gayle and Richard Burstein are
concert chairmen and the cultural
commission is headed by Dr.
Samuel Stulberg, Dr. Paul Gold
and Linda Zalla.
Choral Music
At Beth Shalom
A variety of choral music will be
featured at the 30th anniversary
celebration of the Bel Canto
Choral Society to be held 8 p.m.
June 10 at Cong. Beth Shalom.
The Society will be directed by
Dr. Morton Gold and accompanied
by Rochelle Barr. The public is in-
vited free of charge.
RABBI JEROME EPSTEIN ADDRESSES
MICHIGAN REGION
UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF AMERICA
Synagogue Presidents and Board of Directors of the Michigan Region United
Synagogue of America met this past week at the home of Leonard Baron,
Regional President, to discuss goals and programs for the coming year.
Rabbi Jerome M. Epstein of New York addressed the group. Rabbi Jerome
M. Epstein currently serves as Director of the Department of Regional Activi-
ties of the United Synagogue of America. Before assuming this position, he
served as Director of the New York Region, the Delaware Valley Region and
the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of the United Synagogue.
Rabbi Epstein was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1970. In
addition to his studies in Judaica, he received a Bachelor of Science degree
from the University of Pittsburgh in Psychology, a Master of Science degree in
Counseling from Old Dominion University and he was awarded a doctorate
in Education specializing in Adult Learning and Development from Temple
University.
Before joining the United Synagogue, Rabbi Epstein served as spiritual
leader of congregations in Portsmouth, Virginia, Galveston, Texas and
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
