of the Jewish community ob-
served the eighteenth anniver-
sary of the reunification of
Jerusalem Monday by planting a
tree for Israel in Washington,
D.C.
Contributed to the Israel Em-
bassy by the Jewish Community
Council of Greater Washington
and the Washington Zionist Fed-
eration, the sapling bears a
plaque to commemorate the an-
niversary and was dedicated in a
small ceremony outside the Em-
bassy building.

Lebanon Units
Are Attacked

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An IDF patrol
came under Rocket Propelled
Grenade (RPG) and automatic
weapons fire near Tibnine in the
south Lebanon security belt Fri-
day, and an SLA unit was also
fired on with RPGs, in the same
area.
There were no casualties in
either incident.
Meanwhile, a fleet of 15 buses
brought 478 Lebanese refugees
from Marjayoun, where they had
sought shelter for some weeks
from fighting further north, to
Haifa, to board a ship to take them
back by the safe sea route to Be-
irut.
Three weeks ago some 900 ref-
ugees were carried from Haifa to
Beirut in three Lebanese vessels.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Stunned by
an unexpected 19.4 percent rise in
the April consumer price index,
the political climate in Israel
seemed ripe for drastic economic
cutbacks and reforms.
The government's new eco-
nomic austerity package an-
nounced Sunday, came under
sharp criticism. Economic pundits
said it was an arbitrary selection
among available options and not a
well thought-out economic policy.
What Israelis may expect from
Sunday's Cabinet meeting is
larger cuts in government sub-
sidies; new taxes to limit cash in
circulation and a major increase
in the $150 per capita travel tax
instituted earlier this year. Pre-
mier Shimon Peres and Finance
Minister Yitzhak Modai repor-
tedly want to raise the tax on
travel abroad to $400-$500 per
person.
Some members of the Likud
Knesset faction accused the
Labor-Likud coalition govern-
ment which produced the package
of leaning too heavily on tax-
payers instead of finding ways to
cut government costs.
The
country's
leading
economists have been warning for
months that calamity will de-
scend unless the government car-
ries out the budget cuts it decided
on months ago but has not yet
enforced. What the government
fears most is large scale unem-
ployment arising from those cuts.
