Jerusalem (JTA) — Police
Minister Haim Barley last week
approved the recommended dis-
missal of Border Police officer
Meir Lavie for allowing prisoners
in his custody to stop offfor a swim
while enroute from a courthouse
to jail. Lavie was demoted earlier
from the rank of inspector and
fined.
The prisoners, alleged members
of a Jewish terrorist under-
ground, are charged with acts of
criminal violence and criminal
conspiracy against Arab civilians
in the West Bank and Islamic
shrines in East Jerusalem. They
were being transported from a
court session in Jerusalem to the
Tel Monde jail when, at their re-
quest, Lavie ordered the bus to
stop at the beach in Netanya. The
incident might never have come
to light had not one of the pris-
oners nearly drowned and re-
quired hospitalization.
It was learned subsequently
that the suspected Jewish ter-
rorists on trial have received fa-
vored treatment not given other
prisoners, such as picnics with
their families.

Waltham, Mass. — Studies in
Washington, D.C. and St. Louis,
Mo. by a Brandeis University so-
cial policy analyst suggest that
most Jews in the United States
believe they have experienced
some form of anti-Semitism in
their lifetime.
In addition, says Gary Tobin,
associate professor of Jewish
community research and plan-
ning at Brandeis' Center for Mod-
ern Jewish Studies, "the younger
the person, the more likely he is to
say that he has experienced anti-
Semitism within the past 12
months."

Jerusalem (JTA) — "Trees are
to Sally and me the right way to
remember Israel and to be re-
membered in Israel," U.S. Am-
bassador Samuel Lewis told a
group of high-ranking friends as-
sembled on a mountainside out-
side Jerusalem May 15 to honor
hiin as his eight-year tour of duty
in Israel nears its end.
Lewis, who returns to the U.S.
at the end of this month, spoke in
response to the dedication of a for-
est and picnic area in the names of
himself and his wife Sally Lewis.
The site is the Jewish National
Fund's American Independence
Park at Nes Harim. He said the
/ trees would be one more reason for
f them to come back to celebrate
7
with the Israelis the "next peace
treaty" Israel signs with its
1
neighbors.
Premier Shimon Peres, one of
the leaders attending the cere-
mony, hailed Lewis as a "brilliant
Ambassador and a warm friend"
who served both America and Is-
rael in "difficult and complicated
times," always with utmost tact
and understanding.
